Monza has always been a special track for Ferrari in Formula 1, often delivering results beyond expectations. From the unexpected 1988 double victory by Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto, just days after the passing of Enzo Ferrari, to more recent years, the home atmosphere has frequently reinvigorated the performance of the red cars. A key factor in this success is Monza’s unique track layout: aerodynamic efficiency and a powerful engine are crucial here. In the last two editions, Ferrari has delivered more than respectable performances at the Italian circuit, securing pole positions on Saturday and climbing the podium on Sunday.
This was achieved despite Red Bull’s clear technical superiority. However, this year the technical landscape has shifted. The reigning champions are struggling with a car that seems to have hit its development ceiling, while McLaren has stepped up, taking on the mantle of technical supremacy. These are some of the few certainties in this stage of the 2024 Formula 1 championship, where Mercedes has not shown the consistency it had before the summer break, and the SF-24 surprised everyone with a race pace similar to Max Verstappen’s, despite a disappointing qualifying.
After the race, both Carlos Sainz and Fred Vasseur acknowledged the positive development of the race weekend but emphasized the importance of understanding the reasons behind the significant performance improvement throughout the Zandvoort weekend. As tradition dictates, Monza is also the round where Ferrari introduces an aerodynamic package specifically designed for the high-speed Lombardy circuit. The team principal of the historic Italian team confirmed the arrival of updates aimed at closing the gap with their competitors.
The track’s recent modernization efforts included not just infrastructure upgrades but also a complete resurfacing and new curbs, which could pose challenges depending on pre-event decisions. Additionally, the altered radii of corners in the first chicane may bring unexpected surprises, especially in the Variante Ascari and Prima Variante sections, compared to virtual simulations. Undoubtedly, the sixteenth round of the F1 championship promises to be very intriguing.
Even though Ferrari hasn’t won at home since 2019, when Charles Leclerc took victory in his first year with the team, the historic Ferrari team approaches the “Temple of Speed” with renewed optimism—more than anyone might have expected. The key factors are those already mentioned: a unique track layout, the introduction of both specific and general updates, all coupled with a tradition of positive results even in less favorable seasons. The French head of sports management is fully convinced that the SF-24 can hold its own on home soil and contribute to the season’s primary goal: competing for the constructors’ championship.
For the Ferrari team principal, the Monza weekend marks the beginning of a mini-championship where the Italian team must regain technical control and return to victory. For the Italian round of the championship, Ferrari is betting on the aerodynamic efficiency of the SF-24, enhanced by a specific package, and the reliability of the 066/12 turbo-hybrid unit. However, the main goal this year will be to maintain a strong race pace. Over the last two years, the pole positions secured by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were celebrated with satisfaction, but with the understanding that the car setup was heavily optimized for qualifying.
This doubt became a certainty during the races when Max Verstappen managed to overtake the Ferrari cars with relative ease. Fred Vasseur has assured Ferrari fans that everything possible will be done to give the home crowd something to cheer about, and that preparations for the race weekend are being conducted meticulously. Unlike in recent years, there is no clear favorite for victory in the Italian Grand Prix. This is because even Red Bull, shaken by their defeat to McLaren at Zandvoort, could be competitive.
The same goes for the Woking team and the resurgent Mercedes. Ultimately, while in the last two years the worst-case scenario was finishing behind only Red Bull, this year, many smaller factors could determine the final result. Ferrari has taken a big gamble, choosing to put everything on the line at Monza. It remains to be seen if the Maranello team can maximize the weekend, avoid mistakes, and achieve their goal: to triumph in front of their home crowd.
