Ferrari’s latest SF-26 rear brake duct tweak shows how the Scuderia is fighting back. Ferrari introduced revised rear brake ducts and diffuser upgrades.

Ferrari arrived at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix with one of the most aggressive upgrade packages seen anywhere in the Formula 1 paddock, introducing a substantial set of developments aimed at improving the SF-26’s aerodynamic efficiency and overall competitiveness. No team brought more visible updates to Hard Rock Stadium, underlining how urgently the Scuderia is pushing to close the gap at the front.

Yet while the Miami package delivered some encouraging signs for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, it also reinforced Ferrari’s biggest unresolved weakness: aerodynamic gains alone may not be enough to turn the SF-26 into a genuine championship challenger while the team continues to trail Mercedes in outright power unit performance.

Ferrari focused on rear-end aerodynamic gains in Miami

During the break between the Japanese Grand Prix and the Miami round, Ferrari’s engineering department worked intensively on a broad upgrade package built around aerodynamic refinement. A significant part of that effort was focused on the rear section of the SF-26, where Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations reportedly identified opportunities to improve airflow management and underfloor efficiency.

Among the more notable revisions was a redesign of Ferrari’s brake duct architecture, with engineers extending the brake duct guide elements as part of a broader effort to optimise airflow behaviour around the rear of the car. These changes were not isolated cosmetic tweaks, but part of a carefully integrated aerodynamic concept aimed at extracting more stable downforce and cleaner airflow structures.

Additional vertical fins were also introduced around the rear diffuser area to create more defined airflow channels, helping accelerate the evacuation of air from beneath the car. The objective was to expand the low-pressure zone under the SF-26, improving aerodynamic load while also generating stronger outwash around the rear tyres to reduce airflow disruption.

In modern Formula 1, these kinds of marginal aerodynamic gains can translate into meaningful lap-time improvements, particularly in medium- and high-speed corners where aerodynamic efficiency is critical. That appeared to be reflected in Miami, where Ferrari showed improved agility and stronger cornering behaviour compared to earlier rounds.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc saw progress, but Mercedes gap remains

Charles Leclerc once again led Ferrari’s internal battle across the Miami weekend, outperforming Lewis Hamilton in qualifying sessions for both the Sprint and the Grand Prix. Although race circumstances ultimately reshuffled the final classification, the raw pace comparison suggested Charles Leclerc remained the stronger reference point within the Scuderia camp.

Lewis Hamilton’s weekend was also compromised by race incidents, including contact that limited his ability to extract the maximum from the upgraded package. Even so, the broader conclusion from Miami was clear: Ferrari has improved parts of the SF-26, but the fundamental competitive picture remains largely unchanged.

The car appears increasingly capable in the corners, with a chassis many still regard as one of the strongest on the current grid. However, Ferrari’s deficit to Mercedes in straight-line performance continues to be a major concern, with paddock estimates suggesting the power unit gap remains significant enough to cost valuable lap time.

This explains why so much attention is now focused on Ferrari’s anticipated ADUO power unit upgrade. While aerodynamic development can continue delivering incremental gains, many inside the Formula 1 paddock believe Ferrari’s true breakthrough depends on unlocking more engine performance.

Why Ferrari’s real breakthrough may still be weeks away

The Scuderia’s hopes of transforming the SF-26 into a true title contender appear increasingly tied to regulatory decisions surrounding power unit development. Ferrari is widely expected to benefit from the ADUO upgrade package once the FIA finalises its position on engine manufacturers operating below the competitive benchmark under the current rules.

That ruling could prove decisive for the remainder of Ferrari’s season. Until then, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc may continue relying on aerodynamic evolution, setup optimisation, and race execution to stay within striking distance — but without more horsepower, Ferrari’s battle with Mercedes looks likely to remain an uphill fight.
