Ferrari’s hilarious social media blunder ahead of the F1 Brazilian Grand Prix. Ferrari caused a stir on social media before the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Ferrari and the curious “São GP” post: a linguistic mix-up before the Brazilian Grand Prix

Just before the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, Ferrari shared a preview post on its official social media channels featuring the caption “São GP.” The team’s goal appeared to be a creative play on words with the name of the city, São Paulo. However, the result sparked amusement and curiosity among Brazilian fans due to an unexpected double meaning in Portuguese.

The real meaning behind the phrase

In Portuguese, the word “são” is the third-person plural form of the verb ser (“to be”), meaning “they are.” In everyday speech, the subject pronoun is often dropped, so “são” alone can be interpreted as “they are.” The issue arose with the second part of the phrase — GP — which, outside the world of motorsport, carries a very different meaning in Brazilian slang. GP is commonly understood as the abbreviation for “garota de programa”, a colloquial expression meaning “escort” or “prostitute.”

As a result, the combination “São GP” could be literally read as “They are escorts,” a completely unintended and humorous interpretation that quickly spread online.

Social media reaction to Ferrari’s unintended joke

The mix-up did not go unnoticed. Across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, many users pointed out that in casual Portuguese and internet slang, GP can have connotations entirely unrelated to racing. What was meant to be a fun and lighthearted teaser for the São Paulo race ended up being interpreted as a cheeky linguistic blunder.

Dozens of Brazilian fans replied with humorous comments, memes, and jokes, while international fans joined in the fun once the hidden meaning was explained. Despite the flood of reactions and jokes circulating online, Ferrari has, so far, chosen not to delete or edit the post. The original message remains visible, continuing to attract likes, shares, and laughter as the Interlagos weekend approaches.

A reminder of the global nature of Formula 1

This incident highlights how easily cultural and linguistic nuances can lead to unexpected interpretations in Formula 1’s global community. With millions of fans across multiple languages, a small translation oversight can quickly turn into viral content. Still, the episode has been taken in good humor by most, adding an extra touch of light-hearted fun to the buildup for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

As Ferrari prepares for another challenging race weekend in São Paulo, the “São GP” post will likely remain one of the most talked-about moments on social media — a reminder that even in a high-stakes sport like Formula 1, a sense of humor can unite fans worldwide.
