Lewis Hamilton backs off against Charles Leclerc as Ferrari rules face Austin test

Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Ferrari 2026 F1

Lewis Hamilton’s decision to back out of a close battle with Charles Leclerc at the start of the 2026 United States Grand Prix offered a clear indication of how Ferrari’s approach to teammate racing may be evolving under Fred Vasseur. The two drivers came close to each other through the opening corners at Austin, but Hamilton eventually gave way rather than risk contact, allowing Leclerc to continue his attack on Max Verstappen.

The incident was particularly significant following previous tensions between the Ferrari teammates, including their controversial opening-lap encounter at Monza. Vasseur had already spoken to both drivers about the team’s racing principles, and the events at the Circuit of the Americas suggested those discussions may have influenced how Hamilton approached the situation.

Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc face a tense opening-lap battle in Austin

Starting just one position apart, Hamilton and Leclerc found themselves fighting for track position almost immediately. Both Ferrari drivers cleared Isack Hadjar before Leclerc produced an impressive overtaking move against Max Verstappen through the Esses, with Hamilton coming close to following his teammate past the Red Bull.

However, the most revealing moment had occurred earlier in the lap, when Hamilton attempted to pass Leclerc around the outside of Turn 1. The two Ferraris ran extremely close together, but the Monegasque carried greater momentum out of the corner and maintained his advantage.

Hamilton remained alongside on the approach to Turn 2, creating another potentially difficult situation for Ferrari. Rather than continuing to contest the position, the seven-time world champion lifted off the throttle and moved behind Leclerc, avoiding a confrontation that could have compromised both drivers.

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster Viaplay after the race, Leclerc acknowledged how close the encounter had been. His assessment underlined the fine margins involved as the Ferrari pair negotiated the opening corners while also attempting to gain positions against their rivals.

Leclerc’s subsequent move on Verstappen quickly shifted attention away from the internal battle. Although the Red Bull driver regained the position later on the opening lap, the Ferrari driver demonstrated strong race pace and eventually reclaimed second place during the closing stages.

Hamilton endured a more difficult afternoon, struggling with understeer for much of the Grand Prix. He finished fourth after a late Virtual Safety Car disrupted his pursuit of Verstappen, leaving him unable to turn his recovery into a podium finish.

Fred Vasseur’s Ferrari racing principles face their first major Austin test

The cautious approach Hamilton adopted at the start was especially notable given the discussions surrounding Ferrari’s previous wheel-to-wheel encounters. Following qualifying in Austin, Leclerc had explained, in comments reported by Motorsport.com, that both drivers understood the limits they were expected to respect when racing one another.

The Monegasque acknowledged that there had been occasions during the season when both he and Hamilton had crossed those boundaries. He made clear that neither driver wanted those situations to happen again and that the expectations surrounding their on-track conduct were understood.

Those comments followed a particularly difficult moment between the teammates at the Italian Grand Prix. During the opening stages at Monza, Leclerc defended third position aggressively against Hamilton, forcing his teammate into the gravel and costing the British driver six places.

Leclerc subsequently acknowledged that he had been in the wrong during that incident. Although Vasseur has avoided introducing a formal written set of racing rules, the Ferrari team principal confirmed that he had spoken with both drivers after the Italian Grand Prix and reminded them of the principles governing their battles.

The Austin start therefore represented an important opportunity to see whether those conversations had changed the drivers’ approach. Hamilton’s decision to withdraw from the contest rather than pursue a potentially risky move suggested a greater emphasis on protecting the team’s collective interests.

Ferrari expects Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to balance rivalry with cooperation

Competition between Hamilton and Leclerc remains an important part of Ferrari’s 2026 season. Both drivers are determined to establish themselves as the stronger performer within the team, and their close championship positions have added another dimension to that rivalry.

Only eight points separate the teammates in the Drivers’ Championship, making every position potentially valuable. Their respective qualifying results, race performances and points totals can be examined through the Charles Leclerc vs Lewis Hamilton head-to-head statistics, which track the internal Ferrari contest across the season.

Nevertheless, Vasseur’s conversations with the drivers indicate that the team expects them to exercise judgement when racing each other. The apparent understanding is not that Hamilton and Leclerc must avoid competing, but that neither should allow an unnecessarily aggressive move to undermine Ferrari’s wider race prospects.

That distinction may become particularly important during the opening laps, when the field remains tightly grouped and a collision between teammates can have immediate consequences. The Austin incident suggested that the driver attempting a move may now be expected to abandon it if continuing would create an excessive risk.

Hamilton’s decision was also significant because the two Ferrari drivers were not separated by a comfortable margin. Their proximity meant that maintaining the attack could have intensified the confrontation, but the British driver instead allowed Leclerc to retain the position and continue pursuing Verstappen.

For Ferrari, the result was a second-place finish for the Monegasque and fourth for the Briton, with both cars reaching the chequered flag. The changes in track position during their United States Grand Prix performances can be explored using the F1 Race Position & Progression Tracker.

Vasseur has not introduced a formally documented rule requiring the driver behind to yield, but the Austin start offered an indication of the restraint he expects from both drivers. After the controversy at Monza, Hamilton’s decision to back away from Leclerc may prove an important example of how Ferrari wants its teammates to compete without allowing their personal rivalry to compromise the team.
