Charles Leclerc’s repeated calls for Ferrari to keep developing the SF-26 are set to be answered at the United States Grand Prix, where the Maranello team is preparing a new upgrade package that is expected to deliver an important performance step.
The development arrives at a significant moment for Ferrari. Leclerc returned to the podium with second place at the Singapore Grand Prix, his first top-three finish since Belgium, but he has repeatedly warned that the team has been losing ground to its Formula 1 rivals in recent races. Austin now represents the next opportunity to reverse that trend.
Ferrari Austin upgrades answer Charles Leclerc’s request
Following the races in Baku and Sepang, Charles Leclerc used his post-race comments to emphasise the need for Ferrari to continue upgrading the SF-26 rather than allowing its competitors to pull further ahead.
The Monegasque explained after Baku that Ferrari had been gradually losing ground over several race weekends and therefore needed to respond with further development to reduce the deficit. His concern reflected a changing competitive picture in which Red Bull, in particular, had made significant progress.
The Singapore weekend offered Ferrari some encouragement. Leclerc secured P2 at Marina Bay and the SF-26 showed stronger competitiveness, giving the team momentum before its next major development step. A broader look at why Leclerc’s Singapore result matters ahead of the Austin upgrades also highlighted the importance of converting that progress into more consistent performance.
When Formula 1 returns at the end of October for the United States Grand Prix, Leclerc will have new components available to evaluate. According to Italian publication Autosprint, figures inside Maranello are optimistic that the package can produce a significant improvement in performance.
Ferrari hopes for significant SF-26 performance step in Austin
The upgrades will be closely watched because Ferrari already considers the aerodynamic side of the SF-26 to be one of its stronger areas. Both Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, however, have made clear that the car’s race performance remains constrained by a power-unit disadvantage compared with Mercedes and Red Bull.
Hamilton has previously highlighted Ferrari’s remaining power deficit while also noting that rival teams have followed some of the Scuderia’s ideas. That wider technical picture can be explored in Lewis Hamilton’s assessment of Ferrari’s innovations and power-unit weakness.
A fundamental solution on the engine side will have to wait until 2027. For the remainder of the 2026 campaign, Ferrari’s focus is therefore on extracting as much performance as possible from the current package and maximising its championship position.
That places considerable importance on the upcoming aerodynamic developments. The team will want to establish whether its latest changes can build on the progress seen at Marina Bay while addressing the recent trend that prompted Leclerc to push publicly for continued development.
Ferrari has already made progress with the SF-26’s behaviour, with recent rear-end changes contributing to its Singapore performance step. The Austin package will provide another indication of how much development potential remains in the 2026 car.
Charles Leclerc’s Singapore podium strengthens Ferrari’s position
Leclerc’s second place in Singapore was particularly valuable because it ended a podium drought stretching back to the Belgian Grand Prix. It also arrived after the Ferrari driver had become increasingly vocal about the need to prevent rivals from gaining further ground.
Red Bull’s recent progress has altered the competitive landscape, while Ferrari must also continue managing its fight with Mercedes, McLaren and the other leading teams as development programmes advance through the final part of the season.
Despite those concerns, Singapore strengthened Ferrari’s position in the Constructors’ Championship. The Scuderia scored more points than any other team over the weekend and moved to 444 points, giving it a comfortable advantage over McLaren on 339 and Red Bull on 332.
Second place in the Constructors’ standings remains Ferrari’s immediate championship objective. With the underlying power-unit weakness unlikely to be resolved during 2026, improvements elsewhere on the SF-26 become even more valuable as the team attempts to protect that position and close the performance gap at the front.
Austin becomes crucial test of Ferrari’s development direction
The United States Grand Prix will therefore offer more than simply another opportunity for Leclerc and Hamilton to score points. It will provide Ferrari with an important test of whether the latest development path can deliver the improvement expected inside Maranello.
Leclerc has already welcomed the continued development of the car while remaining realistic about the progress required against Red Bull. His latest views on the evolving competitive picture are covered in Charles Leclerc’s assessment of Ferrari’s SF-26 upgrades and the Red Bull gap.
After calling for Ferrari to react following difficult weekends in Baku and Sepang, Leclerc will now get the opportunity to assess that response on track. The Singapore podium provided encouragement, but the Austin upgrades will offer a clearer indication of whether Ferrari can turn that momentum into a more substantial late-season performance gain.
