The ruthless comparison with the 2024 season: the numbers behind Ferrari’s disastrous year
Ferrari’s 2025 season proved to be a complete disaster, especially when compared with the previous year, and the numbers are merciless. The 2025 campaign was meant to represent one thing only: bringing at least one of the two Formula 1 world championships back to Maranello. In 2024, the Scuderia had fought for the constructors’ title right up to the final corner of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, losing the championship by just 14 points. Keep that figure in mind, as it will become important again later.
The 2025 season had started with widespread expectations of a Ferrari capable of fighting for victory at every race, also thanks to the new driver pairing of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. That belief seemed to be confirmed after pre-season testing in Bahrain and the opening free practice sessions in Australia, where Ferrari appeared competitive and confident.
The final outcome, however, told a very different story: zero wins and just seven podium finishes. It was therefore a disastrous year for the Maranello team, especially when measured against a 2024 campaign that had looked like the beginning of a true Ferrari revival. Instead, the SF25 project proved far too deficient to allow the two Ferrari drivers to fight for victory on a regular basis. The obvious question, then, is what changed compared to 2024?
The numbers compared
Ferrari arrived at the start of the 2025 Formula 1 season with a bold statement: “we have changed our car by 95%”. It was a courageous choice, considering that 2025 was the final year of the current regulatory cycle, and it also appeared to be an aggressive approach. In reality, it turned out to be anything but successful.
The SF25 was plagued by too many problems, ranging from ride-height issues to excessive plank wear, as well as a new rear suspension that proved to be significantly underperforming. As a result, Ferrari had to settle for a single Sprint victory in China, achieved by Lewis Hamilton, and only seven podium finishes, all secured by Charles Leclerc. The contrast with the five Grand Prix victories achieved by the SF24 in 2024 could not be more striking.
Equally painful is the constructors’ championship standings, which perfectly reflect a failed season. As already mentioned, Ferrari had finished the 2024 campaign just 14 points behind title winners McLaren. Not only that, but the team had scored a total of 652 points, an impressive haul when compared to other recent seasons.
In 2025, everything collapsed. Ferrari ended the constructors’ championship in fourth place, a staggering 435 points behind McLaren, having collected just 398 points across the entire season. The loss compared to the previous year amounted to 254 points. An enormous gap for a team that had been ready to take everything and ignite the passion of the Tifosi.
Now all eyes turn to 2026, when Ferrari will be required to deliver a powerful reaction. If that does not happen, the Scuderia could be facing more dark years ahead.
