Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc will start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from eight place today at the Baku City Circuit due to the fact that Kimi Räikkönen’s car has failed the front wing deflection test after qualifying and the Finnish driver has to start from the pitlane. The other Alfa Romeo Racing driver, Antonio Giovinazzi, also has a grid penalty and will start from the back.
At the same time, Charles Leclerc will be allowed to use 4 new medium tyres for the start of the race, as Scuderia Ferrari successfully argued that all four tyres have been flatspotted during the crash in qualifying.
Saturday was a day of despair for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc as he wrecked his hopes of taking pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a crash in qualifying.
But even though the Monegasque driver starts Sunday’s race, which begins at 4.10pm UAE time, from eight place on the grid, he still has the chance to win his first Formula One grand prix in Baku, as Charles Leclerc had dominated practice and been around 0.3 seconds quicker per lap then teammate Sebastian Vettel, with a gap of 0.5 to the Mercedes-GP cars.
