Ferrari’s Brazilian GP gamble: Why Leclerc and Hamilton could still turn disaster into opportunity

Ferrari faces a challenging 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix after Charles Leclerc qualified fourth and Lewis Hamilton finished 11th at Interlagos, with substantial power unit penalties leaving both drivers facing a recovery drive. Despite the difficult starting positions, the wet qualifying session offered encouraging signs for the SF-26, while team principal Fred Vasseur revealed how Ferrari is preparing for a potentially unpredictable race.

Charles Leclerc will receive a 10-place grid penalty following the replacement of the internal combustion engine (ICE) component of his power unit, dropping the Monegasque to 14th on the starting grid. The situation is considerably more complicated for Lewis Hamilton. According to the FIA document, the replacement of multiple power unit components has resulted in a combined 65-place grid penalty for the seven-time world champion, who will start from the back of the field.

However, having qualified ahead of Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton will line up 20th rather than last, with the Red Bull driver occupying the final grid position. It is a difficult scenario for Ferrari, which must now find a way to recover positions with both cars in a race where changing weather conditions could play a decisive role. The situation follows the earlier concerns over Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari power unit that emerged during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend.

Ferrari Brazilian GP qualifying: Leclerc impresses in wet conditions as Hamilton limits the damage

The Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying session overturned much of the competitive picture established during free practice. This was particularly evident in the composition of the second row, occupied by Liam Lawson’s Racing Bulls and Nico Hülkenberg’s Audi.

Ferrari had not looked especially competitive during practice, either over a single lap or during race simulations. Both SF-26 cars appeared to be behind Lando Norris’s McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull in terms of performance. On the soft tyre compound, Charles Leclerc’s race pace was eight tenths of a second slower than the best lap recorded by Andrea Kimi Antonelli during the comparable simulations.

The final practice session brought further difficulties for Ferrari, with both drivers reporting problems. Lewis Hamilton was unable to complete the session because of an engine issue and had to return to the pits, where the mechanics began dismantling parts of his car to investigate the problem. Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, continued to struggle with the balance of his SF-26 and was unable to establish the confidence he needed behind the wheel.

Qualifying, however, told a very different story.

Speaking to Sky Sport, Charles Leclerc admitted that driving in wet conditions had been a recurring weakness throughout his Formula 1 career. Since joining Ferrari, he had struggled to find the right balance with the car in the rain and had rarely felt able to push as hard as he wanted. This time, though, the feeling was completely different. For perhaps the first time in such conditions, the Monegasque felt fully in control of both the car and the situation.

Charles Leclerc also explained that qualifying had effectively become a testing session for Ferrari. The team made successive set-up adjustments between the different stages, and those changes produced encouraging results, at least until the final part of qualifying. Even so, he secured fourth place before the application of his grid penalty.

The improvement was visible from Q1, when Charles Leclerc repeatedly moved to the top of the timing screens. His lap times continued to fall as track conditions improved, with the gradual drying of the circuit eventually allowing drivers to switch from full wet tyres to intermediates.

After a disappointing practice programme, the progress represented an important positive development for Ferrari, even if the grid penalties prevented the team from fully capitalising on its qualifying performance.

Ferrari’s Brazilian GP race strategy: Tyre preservation and recovery opportunities

Qualifying also provided several clues about Ferrari’s approach to the Brazilian Grand Prix, which is scheduled to begin at 18:00 at Interlagos. Speaking to Sky Sport, Fred Vasseur acknowledged that the team had effectively sacrificed part of its qualifying programme because it already knew both drivers would have to serve substantial grid penalties.

The decision was also influenced by Ferrari’s desire to preserve one set of intermediate tyres and one set of full wet tyres. With the race expected to take place in conditions similar to those experienced during qualifying, retaining those tyres could prove particularly valuable.

Wet-weather performance and the available tyre sets could therefore become central to Ferrari’s strategy. The possibility of changing conditions at Interlagos adds another complication, as highlighted by the broader 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix weekend programme.

Fred Vasseur also supported Charles Leclerc’s assessment of the car’s improved behaviour, acknowledging that the SF-26 had performed particularly well around the São Paulo circuit despite the demanding track conditions.

Beyond tyre management, the Ferrari team principal offered few details about the team’s plans. Nevertheless, he recognised that Interlagos is traditionally a circuit where recovering positions is more achievable than at many other venues. That could be especially important for Lewis Hamilton, who faces the prospect of starting from 20th position.

There is precedent for dramatic recoveries at the Brazilian circuit. Max Verstappen has previously demonstrated his ability to climb through the field after starting near the back, including an occasion last year when he started from the pit lane before making his way towards the leading positions.

However, the characteristics of the new-generation 2026 cars introduce an element of uncertainty. Although the regulations promised more action and overtaking opportunities, several races have instead featured long trains of cars struggling to pass one another.

Interlagos has historically offered excellent overtaking opportunities, particularly between Turns 1 and 3 through the Senna S section. Whether the same pattern continues with the current cars remains to be seen.

For Ferrari, the central challenge will be converting its improved wet-weather performance into meaningful progress through the field. The difference between qualifying position and the final result can also be explored through the Ferrari qualifying and race performance statistics.

Lewis Hamilton sees Brazilian GP qualifying as valuable testing opportunity

Despite finishing 11th, Lewis Hamilton also expressed satisfaction with aspects of his qualifying session. Beyond the usual positive assessment, the British driver acknowledged that the session had effectively served as a test.

That was not simply because of his grid penalty. The technical problems encountered during free practice had deprived him of valuable running time, and qualifying gave him an opportunity to recover some of that lost preparation while gaining a better understanding of the circuit and the conditions.

Although the result offered little immediate reward in terms of his starting position, the additional track time could prove useful for Lewis Hamilton as Ferrari prepares for a potentially complicated Grand Prix.

Hamilton and Leclerc clear the air, but Ferrari tensions remain a talking point

Another subject that continued to attract attention throughout the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend was the relationship between Ferrari’s two drivers. The team’s internal disagreements and questions surrounding cooperation have dominated much of the discussion, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton appearing to struggle to find common ground.

Fred Vasseur suggested that he had encouraged the drivers to speak to one another and had helped bring their disagreement to an end. Lewis Hamilton, however, presented a slightly different account.

According to the seven-time world champion, it was not the team principal who arranged the conversation. Instead, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc took the initiative themselves, deciding to discuss their differences, clear the air and put the controversy behind them.

The issue has been particularly prominent following the recent disagreements between the two Ferrari drivers, which have raised wider questions about Ferrari’s internal tensions ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc also made his feelings clear. Tired of the continuing speculation and controversy, the Monegasque believes it is time to end the discussion, move forward, avoid unnecessary disputes and concentrate entirely on the upcoming race.

The emphasis now shifts from the relationship between the drivers to their performance on track. Ferrari needs both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to focus on recovering positions after the grid penalties transformed an already difficult weekend into an even greater challenge.

Can Ferrari recover to the top five at Interlagos?

The Brazilian Grand Prix promises to be a dynamic and unpredictable contest, with the weather potentially playing a decisive role in the outcome. Changing track conditions could lead to several pit stops, creating strategic opportunities for teams willing to react quickly.

Ferrari hopes that the progress demonstrated by Charles Leclerc in qualifying, combined with its preserved wet-weather tyre sets, will provide the foundation for a competitive race. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, faces an even more demanding recovery from the back of the grid, although the characteristics of Interlagos could give him opportunities to move forward.

The possibility of a top-five finish remains an important question for Ferrari. With both drivers starting well behind their qualifying positions, much will depend on tyre management, changing conditions, overtaking opportunities and the team’s ability to execute its strategy.

Whether Ferrari can transform a compromised qualifying result into a strong Brazilian Grand Prix performance will ultimately be decided on the circuit.
