The 2026 season will decide Ferrari’s future in Formula 1, and for this reason it could represent a final call for several key figures within the team.
Anticipation is growing for a championship that will undoubtedly mark a complete reset for the entire grid. The 2026 season represents a major opportunity for Formula 1 teams such as Ferrari, which are seeking redemption after a drought that has now lasted for several years. The Scuderia will need to make the most of the arrival of this new technical cycle, as the results achieved next year will also be crucial for shaping the long-term future of the team.
The new Ferrari car will be unveiled on January 23 at Fiorano, followed by the traditional shakedown. During the first Barcelona tests, the team will run a so-called “Spec A” version of the car, which will be used mainly to evaluate the reliability of the various components. Only during the Bahrain tests, and then in Australia, will the definitive version of the car appear on track, the one that will compete throughout the rest of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The final call for Fred Vasseur
Next year will represent a crucial crossroads for several teams, including the Scuderia from Maranello. Ferrari in 2026 is almost forced to be fighting for the Formula 1 title after the disappointment of the 2025 season. It will be vital to start the new technical cycle at the front in order to avoid having to play catch-up in the years that follow.
“For some figures in this Ferrari cycle, 2026 will be a final call. I think that Fred Vasseur, if there were to be a season in line with 2025, would be called into question,” Roberto Chinchero said in a video published on Motorsport.com’s channel. Ferrari cannot afford to get the interpretation of the new regulations wrong, because that would likely mean being out of contention not only in 2026, but also in the seasons that follow.
However, Ferrari is not the only team with so much at stake next year. “Mercedes is risking just as much as Ferrari. I don’t think Russell still has the desire to spend years with one or two wins,” Roberto Chinchero added. As a result, the British driver could also begin to look around with a view to the 2027 season.
Charles Leclerc’s future in red
The Monegasque driver has sworn loyalty to Ferrari, but another disappointing season could prove too much even for Charles Leclerc. The number of drivers approaching the end of their contracts leaves many scenarios open for 2027. Charles Leclerc could start to explore his options and potentially decide to leave Ferrari if an opportunity arose to join a team that is expected to be a reference point under the new regulations.
Referring to Ferrari’s possible difficulties, the Monegasque would certainly not be called into question from a performance point of view, but he could play a different role in the driver market. “With Leclerc it’s different. He is the one who would have to decide,” Roberto Chinchero explained.
A particularly delicate situation concerns the interest from Aston Martin, which appears to have a convincing long-term project. It will also be important to understand Red Bull’s position, and therefore the potential movements of Max Verstappen, which could effectively shake up the entire driver market. The feeling is that the drivers with the greatest decision-making power will be the Dutchman, along with Charles Leclerc and George Russell. It is precisely the latter two who could look elsewhere if their cars are not fighting for the championship in 2026.
The 2026 season represents more than just a new set of rules; it is a moment of truth for the project Vasseur has built at Maranello. If the Scuderia fails to emerge as a frontrunner, the resulting instability could finally push Charles Leclerc to look toward rival projects like Aston Martin or Mercedes to fulfill his championship ambitions.
