Ferrari is preparing its 2026 engine with a groundbreaking project: here’s the “678” and the enormous advantage it could bring on track
With several Grands Prix still remaining in the current season, almost all teams have been focusing for months on next year’s projects, marking the start of a new era. Ferrari is developing its 2026 engine, a project that is considered quite revolutionary and could deliver significant on-track benefits.
The upcoming season promises to be full of novelties. The cars will change dramatically from an aerodynamic perspective, but above all, the new engines will debut, generating a lot of discussion. Everything will be reset: teams that have had more time to work on these projects could gain a considerable advantage.
For this reason, Ferrari is pushing forward in Maranello as well. As reported by Motorsport.com Italy, the Scuderia is developing the new “678” Power Unit, featuring a major revolution. The focus is not only on power but also on engine design, which will allow the team to reduce radiator size, gaining an important aerodynamic edge.
The engine department, led by Enrico Gualtieri, is working closely with the chassis team to create a compact unit, enabling narrower and more tightly packaged sidepods. The goal is to approach the minimum weight required under the new regulations, 768 kg. By reducing engine size, Ferrari could gain “greater freedom” in aerodynamic design, aiming to bring a car to the track capable of matching its rivals.
Next year could indeed represent the moment for the Prancing Horse to attempt a return to the top of Formula 1, a position the Scuderia has been distant from for too many years.
