Ferrari confirms: agreement for next-generation F1 power units is near
F1 has yet to debut the revolutionary 2026 engines, but attention is already turning to the future. Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur confirmed that the pinnacle category is close to reaching an agreement on the next generation of power units, with advanced talks ongoing between the FIA, Formula 1, and the manufacturers.
From 2026, a new hybrid engine will arrive, featuring a 50-50 split between thermal and electric power, combined with the use of 100% sustainable fuels. This breakthrough has already attracted new players such as Audi, Honda’s return, and the debut of Red Bull Powertrains in collaboration with Ford.
Yet, despite the excitement, the regulations have also raised some concerns: the main worries relate to slower lap times and the need for significant energy savings during races. This situation has prompted the FIA and manufacturers to already consider a new regulatory cycle.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has never hidden his dream of returning to V8 engines powered by sustainable fuels as early as 2029 or 2030. However, discussions have taken a different turn: the window for a new regulation change is now set for 2031.
Ferrari breaks the silence
Fred Vasseur clarified the decision-making status: “Compared to the past, we are much ahead of schedule. It is a complicated decision, but I believe we will soon find a common project. There is no rush; today everyone is focused on 2026, but the foundations for the future are already on the table.” – the Ferrari team boss pointed out.
The Frenchman added that the goal remains to ensure stability without compromising the spectacle on track. A challenge Formula 1 will have to tackle with decisions that could reshape the championship over the next decade.
