The second free practice session at the Singapore Grand Prix has just come to an end. Here is the full recap and the results from Friday evening’s running under the lights at Marina Bay.
First 30 minutes
As night fell on the Marina Bay circuit, FP2 began with plenty of on-track action. All drivers opted for the medium tyre, except for the two Aston Martins who chose to run on the hard compound.
McLaren immediately confirmed their competitiveness, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri taking the top two places, while Carlos Sainz emerged as their closest challenger. Soon after, Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson broke up the McLaren dominance, placing themselves in second and third position respectively. Verstappen, who is fighting for a crucial part of his championship hopes, benefited from an upgraded Red Bull featuring modifications to the front wing, a clear sign that the team has committed heavily to the Asian weekend.
Lewis Hamilton also made his presence felt with a quick lap that lifted him to third place behind the McLarens. But George Russell saw his session unravel after an error at Turn 16, where he hit the barriers and damaged his front wing while puncturing his left tyre. Although he managed to limp the car back to the pits, Race Control was forced to bring out the first red flag to allow marshals to clear the track. That ended his evening prematurely, leaving the Mercedes mechanics with a major repair job.
Final 30 minutes
The second half of practice opened with the first qualifying simulations. Hamilton briefly went to the top of the timesheets on medium tyres, but his stint at the top was short-lived. Esteban Ocon, switching to softs, delivered a 1:31.480 to jump into first place.
Soon after came the second red flag of the day. Liam Lawson, pushing hard on a flying lap, clipped the wall and lost a wheel. Sparks trailed from the underside of his car as he crawled back towards pit lane, but he could not make it back to his garage.
With 14 minutes to go, the session resumed but more drama followed. Norris struck the wall in the pit lane and was left stranded until the McLaren and Ferrari mechanics helped push his car back. The incident was triggered by a Ferrari pit release error: Charles Leclerc was given the green light to leave, failed to check to his right, and ended up forcing Norris into the barrier. The damage was limited to the McLaren’s front wing, allowing Norris to return to the track for the closing laps.
In the final minutes, the order shifted again. Piastri ended the session on top, followed by Isack Hadjar, Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso and Norris. With the multiple stoppages disrupting their run plans, most teams were forced to abandon race pace simulations and instead focus almost entirely on qualifying preparations.
