Lewis Hamilton took 26 Grands Prix to secure his first podium with Ferrari, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli also took 26 races to achieve his first Formula 1 victory. It’s an extraordinary achievement that offers plenty of interesting statistics for fans who follow age, nationality, and milestones—but more importantly, it highlights how Antonelli reached the top. During the 56 thrilling laps of the Chinese Grand Prix, he demonstrated all the qualities that project him as a potential future world champion, perhaps sooner than many expect.
One of his standout qualities was the calm with which he managed the race. Starting from pole position, the Italian showed no panic when Lewis Hamilton overtook him at the first corner, knowing he would soon reclaim the lead. Racing like a seasoned leader after George Russell’s qualifying mishap, he immediately assumed control with the maturity of an experienced driver.
George Russell proved to be his toughest and most cunning rival, engaging in a hidden yet tense duel. The Englishman produced a series of repeated fast laps, all of which Kimi Antonelli countered with slightly superior performance. It was a phenomenal reaction that disrupted both Russell’s ambitions and morale. This was especially significant because Russell had already realized last year that he would be sharing a garage with a driver of extraordinary talent who would challenge his standing.
Kimi Antonelli also rarely repeats mistakes. He capitalizes on his composure, and after each error, he comes back stronger and more decisive thanks to his highly analytical approach. His championship ambitions are still to be approached race by race, as Antonelli will gradually reposition himself within the team, also in the political dimension—a skill that proved crucial for Nico Rosberg when he claimed the world title over Hamilton.
Credit is due to Mercedes as well, for having recognized and nurtured a potential champion. Toto Wolff, along with Gian Carlo Minardi and his son Giovanni, demonstrated exceptional foresight in guiding Antonelli’s development. It’s also worth noting that some of the Ferrari personnel who previously worked at Brackley, including technical director James Allison and strategy & development head Simone Resta, contributed to the success of the Mercedes machine, whose strong power unit and thermal engine characteristics have been unmatched by rivals.
Nonetheless, Ferrari delivered an incredible spectacle in Shanghai. The brilliant start by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc was exciting, showing the technical ingenuity of the Ferrari engineers. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, expects more power to exploit on the straights, and upcoming car developments will reveal if Ferrari can compete even more effectively.
In this race, we saw the real Lewis Hamilton—arguably the best he has been since joining Ferrari—able to hold off a Charles Leclerc who is not as fond of the Shanghai track. Performance-wise, Ferrari managed the medium Pirelli tires well but struggled with the hard compounds, indicating that the gap to Mercedes isn’t solely about the power unit.
Amid these technical notes, the breathtaking duel between Hamilton and Leclerc stood out. The two teammates overtook each other eight times, touching lightly on one occasion. Ferrari’s decision not to intervene was wise. The rivalry is expected to continue throughout the season. Hamilton, showing his current form, could again become a championship contender, while Leclerc, a fierce competitor, understands that these hybrid-era cars—with all their thermal-electric management complexities—limit the expression of his immense driving talent. From a spectator perspective, this energy-recovery dynamic provides an impressive show.
It is also important to note that, beyond the celebration of Antonelli and Ferrari, four drivers failed to start the race, with the reigning McLaren team immediately sidelined. While technical errors played a role, it raises questions about whether these regulations were fully thought through. Teams beyond McLaren may need to ask serious questions and propose reasonable solutions to preserve the sport that fans cherish.
