Taking into consideration the disappointing outcome of the 2022 Formula 1 season for Scuderia Ferrari, due to a series of strategic mistakes and power unit reliability issues, despite a great start to the championships with race wins in Bahrain and Australia, a win in front of the Tifosi at Monza would have made things better at least for a couple of days.
And following Charles Leclerc’s great pole position in the qualifying session for the Italian Grand Prix, ex-Ferrari driver Jean Alesi indeed “believed” the Monegasque “could win” in front of the Maranello team’s home fans. Eventually it was not meant to be for the Tifosi, as Charles Leclerc had to settle for P2, after another dominant performance by Max Verstappen, with the RB18 car clearly superior in terms of race pace, just like in the previous five rounds.
Scuderia Ferrari tried a different strategy at Monza, going for a two-stop strategy with Charles Leclerc against the Dutchman’s one-stop, but it soon became clear that the F1-75 could not match Red Bull regardless of the strategy.
Unfortunately Ferrari has now lost the pace to fight for race wins, after having the fastest car in the first part of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, when the Maranello team missed out on many opportunities due to a number of power unit issues and a few questionable strategic decisions, which has led the Italian side to having to challenge only for second place in the Constructors’ Championship against the underperforming Mercedes.
Jean Alesi feels a more “aggressive approach” has to be taken by Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto, whom he “admires”.

“Honestly, I believed it,” Jean Alesi admitted, in a recent interview for Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera – “I thought Charles Leclerc could win at Monza after that crazy lap in qualifying. This was not the case and I have some friendly and affectionate thoughts to pass on to Mattia Binotto. I admire his virtue, as a true leader, he protects his team. It’s the right attitude, always. For example, no one knows the name of the designer who chose the wrong path in Mercedes, just as anyone who makes a mistake under pressure during a race must be protected. As a Tifosi I am also convinced that Binotto can look for some reinforcement for the future without fanfare. On the strategy front, where perhaps a more aggressive approach would be useful; on the front of the rapid understanding of the set-up, which Red Bull seems to be doing with a greater state of readiness. I’m not talking about revolutions but about consolidation on some decisive aspects to counter first-rate adversaries. On the other hand, I am sure that this year’s reliability problems will be solved and that Ferrari will be able to race with a solid as well as a very powerful power unit. There is everything to keep improving. Only a few tweaks are missing, in the name of continuity.” – Jean Alesi concluded, as reported by the Italian media.
Ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari are 139 points behind Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings, while the Maranello team only has an advantage of 35 points ahead of Mercedes.
