After reducing the power of the engine last year due to inadequate cooling for the thin air at the 2,200 meters of the Mexican circuit, the technicians at Maranello team have introduced a very open engine cover: the priority is not aerodynamic efficiency but reliability. The goal is to gain points on Mercedes in the battle for second place in the Constructors’ Championship.
In the Mexican Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari does not prioritize aerodynamic efficiency; instead, reliability takes precedence. The circuit dedicated to the Rodriguez brothers is located in the capital on a plateau at an altitude of 2,200 meters, so the technicians must deal with the particularly thin air.
Cooling for power unit 066/10 and the braking system were the main elements considered in preparation for the second leg of the triple-header after Austin: the engine cover has been opened to the maximum. There are only six openings for heat dissipation, but they have very wide gills.
Last year, the Scuderia was forced to significantly reduce the engine’s power because the cooling system was inadequate, and the red team had a disappointing weekend. It is hoped that the lessons from 2022 with the F1-75 have been learned, and the expectation is to have adapted the system to the actual needs of a high-altitude circuit. On paper, the track with its three long straights should suit the characteristics of the SF-23.
After Carlos Sainz’s third-place finish, which he gained thanks to Lewis Hamilton’s disqualification and Charles Leclerc’s exclusion for excessive wear on the plank, Ferrari aspires to challenge Mercedes for second place in the Constructors’ Championship. To achieve this, they need to recover points on the Black Arrows.
