Scuderia Ferrari’s season exceeded expectations. The Maranello team still cannot be completely satisfied with its performance – the fight is still only for third place in Formula 1 Constructor Standings with McLaren – but the growth indicators are all there with respect to a horrible 2020 and the prospects of an equally negative 2021, considering how much the development of the cars was blocked this year. Instead, Ferrari managed to improve both from the power unit point of view (especially with the updates brought to Sochi and Istanbul), and from the aerodynamic point of view. In the constructors’ standings, McLaren is only seven and a half points ahead in third place. Ferrari is still in the fight also thanks to Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, capable of making a constant and balanced contribution.
One figure underlines this aspect: Ferrari is the team that has the most appearances in the top 10 – and therefore in the points – during the current season, ahead of the 2021 United States Grand Prix next weekend. For 26 times out of 32 occasions (considering the 16 Grands Prix), Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished in the points. No other team, not even the very strong Mercedes, has managed to do the same: the reigning champions, together with Red Bull and McLaren, are in fact at 25. Ferrari’s only real problems date back to the Le Castellet disaster (with Carlos ainz and Charles Leclerc out from the top 10) and 11th place for the Spaniard in Portimão. For the rest, with a little more luck, the Red team could have significantly increased the total: in this regard, it is necessary to remember the unfortunate outcome of Charles Leclerc’s race in Monaco, the accident at the start of the Hungaroring and the tire lottery in the thrilling finale in Sochi. However, Ferrari is not the only one that can complain: for example, Mercedes can also do the same regarding the incident of Valtteri Bottas in Monte-Carlo, or on those of Lewis Hamilton in Monza and Baku; likewise Red Bull for the Max Verstappen accident in Azerbaijan; or McLaren, who finished outside the points twice in a row with Lando Norris, a victim without blame at the Hungaroring and Spa.
This is the ranking of the top 10 finishes after 16 races in 2021:
Red Bull 25
Aston Martin 12
Alfa Romeo 4
