Ferrari and Mercedes find themselves in a heated battle for second place in the Constructors’ Championship. The two teams are separated by only 4 points in the standings, and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be decisive. However, finishing ahead is not fundamental, and here’s the reason why.
More money, but…
Anyone who manages to secure the second position in the championship will receive a significantly larger financial reward from Liberty Media compared to the third-placed team. However, there is also a slight disadvantage for 2024.
From 2022 onwards, Formula 1 has changed the rules regarding the wind tunnel time that teams can use for the following season.
The team finishing second this season will have the opportunity to use 75% of the allowed time to develop next year’s car, while the third-placed team will be entitled to 5% more, thus 80% of the total.

It should be noted, however, that the additional 5% of wind tunnel time does not guarantee a significant performance advantage.
Consider the penalty received by Red Bull at the end of 2022, a 10% reduction, which did not prevent the Austrian team’s dominance in 2023. Both teams are in a stable financial situation, so finishing in third place would not pose difficulties for either of them. Looking at the advantage in terms of 2024, albeit minimal, both Ferrari and Mercedes will undoubtedly do their best to beat their rival and confirm themselves as the second force.
