Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto believes that Ferrari’s power unit is still not quite on par with offerings from Mercedes and Honda, but there has been significant progress on both the engine and chassis front. After a disappointing 2020 championship saw Ferrari have their worst season since 1980, the Italian side’s 2021 has started reasonably well with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing in sixth and eighth respectively in Bahrain.
At the same time, according to German automobile magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’, the Maranello team’s pace came as a surprise to everyone: “Ferrari was driving very conservative during testing. This caused a positive surprise. Even the competition did not expect Ferrari to be so strong. In qualifying, Ferrari is a danger for McLaren. In the race pace, McLaren is stronger.”
Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto also confirmed for the Italian media that the Maranello team will bring some aero updates to Imola, which will host the second round of the 2021 Formula 1 season, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, on 18 April. The following days should give us more details regarding Ferrari’s updates for Imola, but has been confirmed by Mattia Binotto is that the Maranello team will continue development work on the SF21 only until the Spanish Grand Prix, after which Ferrari will focus mostly on the 2022 project.
