Lewis Hamilton reflects on shifting perceptions after landmark Ferrari victory as title race intensifies
Lewis Hamilton believes his first Formula 1 victory with Ferrari has changed the conversation surrounding his season, although the seven-time world champion insists his own mindset has remained exactly the same despite the renewed attention.
After finishing second in both Monaco and Canada, Lewis Hamilton finally reached the top step of the podium at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. The result marked an important milestone in his Ferrari career and immediately strengthened his position in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship, bringing him significantly closer to championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
While the timing of a Virtual Safety Car certainly worked in Ferrari’s favour by allowing Lewis Hamilton to make an inexpensive pit stop, the Scuderia’s pace throughout the closing stages suggested the British driver had the speed to challenge for victory regardless. His final stint proved particularly convincing, enabling him to pull clear of George Russell and Lando Norris before taking Ferrari’s first victory of the campaign.
With Mercedes continuing to battle intermittent reliability concerns and Ferrari steadily improving the SF-26 through a series of technical upgrades, many observers now consider Lewis Hamilton one of the leading contenders for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship.
Lewis Hamilton notices a rapid shift in opinion
Speaking after his breakthrough Ferrari victory, Lewis Hamilton acknowledged that he had been surprised by how quickly opinions surrounding his performances had changed.
Asked about the reaction from sections of the media, former Formula 1 drivers and various pundits, the Briton suggested that the change in public perception had been remarkable. However, he also made it clear that external opinions have never been his primary motivation.
According to comments reported by Speedweek, Lewis Hamilton explained that it had been striking to witness how rapidly the narrative had shifted following a single victory. Despite that, he stressed that he pays very little attention to outside criticism or praise.
Instead, Lewis Hamilton emphasised that the overwhelming support from Ferrari fans had been the aspect that meant the most to him. He suggested that sharing such an emotional moment with the Tifosi and supporters around the world carried far greater significance than changing the minds of critics.
Ferrari driver remains focused on execution rather than championship calculations
Although Lewis Hamilton has rapidly emerged as one of the favourites to challenge Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the Drivers’ Championship, the Ferrari driver insists he is not allowing himself to become distracted by title speculation.
Drawing on his extensive experience from previous championship campaigns, the seven-time world champion explained that he understands the importance of maintaining focus over a long Formula 1 season. Rather than thinking about the standings, he said his priority is to maximise every race weekend and continue extracting the best possible performance from both himself and the SF-26.
Lewis Hamilton also acknowledged that there is still a considerable portion of the championship remaining and suggested that success cannot be rushed. According to the Ferrari driver, the team is concentrating on continuous improvement, with every member of the Scuderia contributing to the recent progress made since the beginning of the season.
He also expressed pride in the commitment shown by everyone at Maranello, highlighting the collective effort behind Ferrari’s recent resurgence. Lewis Hamilton indicated that maintaining this level of performance, rather than becoming distracted by championship mathematics, remains the team’s primary objective.
The 2026 Formula 1 title battle continues to tighten
As the championship heads deeper into the European leg of the calendar, the fight at the front is becoming increasingly competitive. Andrea Kimi Antonelli continues to lead the standings, but Lewis Hamilton has significantly reduced the gap following Ferrari’s victory in Spain.
George Russell also remains firmly in contention despite a difficult run of results. The Mercedes driver recovered strongly in Barcelona by finishing second after Andrea Kimi Antonelli retired with a battery-related power unit failure during the closing laps of the race.
With only 50 points separating Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship is shaping up to be one of the closest and most unpredictable title fights in recent years. Ferrari’s recent progress, combined with Mercedes’ occasional reliability setbacks, has ensured that every race weekend could play a decisive role in determining who ultimately lifts the world championship trophy.
