Andrea Kimi Antonelli explains why Lewis Hamilton’s championship challenge is not changing his approach
The battle for the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship is becoming increasingly intense, but Andrea Kimi Antonelli insists he is deliberately avoiding one thing that many drivers monitor closely throughout the season: the championship standings.
Although the young Mercedes driver continues to lead the title race, Lewis Hamilton’s recent surge in form has significantly increased the pressure at the top of the standings. Ferrari’s victory in Barcelona, combined with Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s retirement due to a battery failure, reduced what had once been a comfortable advantage and reignited the championship fight heading into the Austrian Grand Prix.
With Mercedes still showing outstanding pace but also experiencing reliability concerns in recent races, many believe Lewis Hamilton now has a genuine opportunity to mount a sustained challenge for what would be an unprecedented eighth Formula 1 world title. As a result, every race weekend is becoming increasingly significant in shaping the championship picture.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli prefers to ignore the championship standings
Speaking before the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, Andrea Kimi Antonelli revealed that he intentionally avoids checking the Drivers’ Championship table, preferring to concentrate solely on extracting the maximum performance each weekend rather than becoming distracted by points calculations.
The Italian explained that he is fully aware of the current gap to Lewis Hamilton only because those around him repeatedly remind him of it. Rather than allowing the standings to influence his mindset, he prefers to focus on one race at a time and avoid looking too far into the future.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli also admitted that competing directly against the Briton for the Formula 1 crown would be a remarkable experience. The Mercedes driver described the Ferrari star as one of the toughest competitors on the grid and praised the seven-time world champion for the level of performance he continues to display.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Andrea Kimi Antonelli explained that he deliberately stays away from the standings because he does not want to think too far ahead. While he knows the points difference to Lewis Hamilton, he said that was only because people had mentioned it countless times.
He also acknowledged that the prospect of battling Lewis Hamilton for the championship would be something special, adding that he has enormous respect for the Ferrari driver. Andrea Kimi Antonelli described the seven-time world champion as an exceptionally strong competitor who is driving at a very high level and said the seven-time world champion has been an important role model throughout his career.
A memorable first meeting with Lewis Hamilton
Andrea Kimi Antonelli also reflected on the very first time he met Lewis Hamilton, a moment that dates back to the 2018 Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Long before becoming one of Formula 1’s brightest young stars, the Italian was serving as a grid kid during the pre-race ceremony, standing alongside the drivers on the starting grid.
Years later, after claiming his breakthrough victory at the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this season, Andrea Kimi Antonelli showed the British driver a photograph from that day at Monza. The image captured the pair together years before they became championship rivals.
The young Italian recalled that Lewis Hamilton reacted with genuine surprise when he saw the photograph, jokingly realising how much time had passed since their first meeting. It was a light-hearted reminder of Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable rise through the junior ranks—from an aspiring youngster watching one of his sporting heroes to fighting that very same driver for the Formula 1 world championship.
Despite the growing rivalry between Mercedes and Ferrari, Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s admiration for Lewis Hamilton remains unchanged. As the 2026 season enters a crucial phase, their relationship continues to reflect a rare combination of fierce on-track competition and mutual respect, adding another compelling storyline to one of the most intriguing title battles Formula 1 has seen in recent years.
