Ferrari put Rafael Câmara through another important test at Fiorano on Tuesday as the 21-year-old Brazilian stepped up his preparations for a possible Formula 1 debut next season. The Formula 2 driver is one of the most prominent young names being discussed for the future of the championship, with a potential move to Haas among the options under consideration.
The test took place at Ferrari’s home circuit and represented another significant stage in the development programme devised for the Ferrari Driver Academy member. The Maranello team considers Rafael Câmara one of motorsport’s most serious and promising young prospects and hopes he could be ready to graduate to Formula 1 as early as 2027.
Ferrari intensifies Rafael Câmara’s Formula 1 preparations
The Fiorano session allowed Ferrari to continue assessing whether its young driver is ready to compete for a place at the highest level of motorsport. It followed the Brazilian’s first Formula 1 test in Budapest, where he drove the SF-25 as part of an FIA Testing of Previous Cars programme.
A series of internal meetings followed the latest track session, allowing Ferrari to review Rafael Câmara’s performance, evaluate his progress during the season and outline the next steps required to prepare him for Formula 1. The programme is intended to help the academy prospect adapt to the physical, technical and operational demands of competing in the championship.
Rafael Câmara faces further evaluation after the summer break
Ferrari and Rafael Câmara will continue working towards that objective after the summer break, when another assessment is expected. The Brazilian is being considered for a possible opportunity with Haas, a team that has provided Ferrari-backed drivers with a route into Formula 1 and could again play an important role in Maranello’s long-term plans.
Italian driver Leonardo Fornaroli, one of McLaren’s leading young prospects, is also expected to be involved in the battle for the opportunity. The situation has created a wider Ferrari-McLaren contest over Haas’ 2027 line-up, making the performances of both drivers on track particularly important. Neither can afford to approach the coming races or evaluations unprepared.
Ferrari academy prospect carries major responsibility
Alongside the pressure surrounding his own career, Rafael Câmara will also carry the responsibility of extending the positive sequence of talent produced by the Ferrari Driver Academy. He would become the third driver to reach Formula 1 from Ferrari’s junior programme after Charles Leclerc and Oliver Bearman.
The Scuderia’s broader plan is to develop another potential long-term option while Oliver Bearman continues building experience with Haas. Rafael Câmara’s progress has therefore become an important part of Ferrari’s future driver strategy.
Rafael Câmara’s rapid rise through the junior categories
The Brazilian’s swift progression through motorsport suggests he possesses the necessary credentials to take the next step. Rafael Câmara began karting at the age of six, following in his brother’s footsteps, before moving to Europe and attracting attention with a series of consistently promising results.
His performances earned him a place in the Ferrari Driver Academy, and his rise continued when he won the 2025 Formula 3 championship. He subsequently moved into Formula 2 for the 2026 season, bringing him another step closer to the Formula 1 grid.
The next phase will involve continuing Ferrari’s structured development programme. Further tests, meetings and performance evaluations will ultimately determine whether Rafael Câmara is sufficiently prepared to make the biggest jump of his career and secure a place in Formula 1.
