Ferrari heads to Brazil seeking confirmation of third place in the Constructors’ World Championship, but the Maranello team is undoubtedly committed to experimenting with solutions that can be transferred to the 2022 single-seater which is a work in progress back at the Maranello factory.
The most striking example is certainly that of the new hybrid system that the team has decided to run on the PU4 to gain experience on the track, so as not to face surprises next year, when the components of the power unit will have to be frozen until to 2025.
The new ERS is proving to be both performing and reliable, so it can be considered a leap in quality that Ferrari will have to transfer to the “Superfast” engine and chassis by taking advantage of the drastic rule changes.
Several accessories have also been introduced on the 6-cylinder 065/6, such as oil and petrol pumps, which foreshadow the 2022 ones and which allow for weight savings and a reduction in overall dimensions.
In Mexico we saw the debut of a new front brake disc which satisfied the drivers, so much so that the solution will also be maintained in the remaining races of the season. As we anticipated last week, this is a Brembo-produced disc that has important characteristics that we will see on the ground-effect single-seaters that will adopt 18-inch Pirelli tires.
Although the 2022 discs will have a larger diameter, going from the current 280 mm to 330 mm in 2022, Ferrari has decided to test the new materials and different construction on the SF21.

The solution that appeared in Mexico was easily recognizable by the unusual design of the cooling holes. Compared to the version with almost 1,500 holes used in the races that require the braking system the most, the current construction gives up a hundred holes (next year they will have to be at least 3 mm) because the arrangement of the carbon fibers has been changed in the overlapping of the layers with different angles, useful to ensure a product that will wear less and will cause less vibrations in braking.
There is an obvious attempt to meet the needs of the budget cap which requires greater efficiency in the use of every detail that is part of the car, without losing anything in performance.
