In the last few days, the line-up for the 2022 Formula 1 season was completed, as Chinese racing driver, currently competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for UNI-Virtuosi Racing, Guanyu Zhou, was offcially confirmed to replace Antonio Giovinazzi in Alfa Romeo next season, with the Italian who will be moving to Formula E to race for Dragon Penske Autosport in 2022.
One driver who has never been in Formula 1 and hopes to enter it sooner or later is Callum Ilot, who is supported by the Ferrari Driver Academy and has also been the official test driver for Scuderia Ferrari and test and reserve driver for Alfa Romeo for the 2021 Formula One. The British driver seems to have reacted to the news that Guanyu Zhou will be in Formula 1 next year, also taking into consideration the fact that Callum Ilot clearly beat him in Formula 2 last year, as a teammate in UNI-Virtuosi (with a gap of 49.5 points).

“Maybe one day … # I’ll be back”, commented the British driver in a post on Instagram in which there are photos of him driving the cars of Ferrari, Haas and, precisely, Alfa Romeo. And to those who asked him if that ‘I’ll be back’ means his temporary farewell to Formula 1 even as a reserve driver, Ilott replied: “It makes no sense to see others driving around the world for another year”. The 2020 Formula 2 runner-up will race in IndyCar for the whole of next season, having signed a contract with Juncos-Racing. And maybe his disappointment also concerns the future in general in Formula 1, with more and more doors closing and – instead – opening to those who have financial backing.
