Ferrari team orders: Should Maranello back Lewis Hamilton over Charles Leclerc after summer break?. Ferrari face a crucial Hamilton-Leclerc decision after 11 races.

Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Ferrari 2026 F1

Ferrari enter the Formula 1 summer break with an increasingly difficult question over how to manage Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc in the 2026 drivers’ title fight. Hamilton is second in the championship with 169 points, 31 ahead of his team-mate, while Mercedes leader Kimi Antonelli has opened a 50-point advantage over the seven-time world champion.

With 11 races still remaining, neither Ferrari driver is out of contention. However, Hamilton’s stronger points return across the opening 11 rounds has strengthened the argument that Frédéric Vasseur may soon have to consider whether keeping both drivers on completely equal terms remains the best way to challenge Antonelli for the championship.

Lewis Hamilton holds clear Ferrari advantage in 2026 standings

Hamilton has established himself as Ferrari’s highest-placed driver over the first half of the campaign. His 169 points leave him second overall, while Charles Leclerc is fourth with 138 after collecting one victory and four podium finishes. George Russell has moved between the Ferrari pair in third place.

The full championship picture can be followed through the current Formula 1 driver standings, but the most important figure from Ferrari’s perspective is the 50-point gap separating Hamilton from Antonelli. The Briton remains the closest Ferrari challenger to the Mercedes driver, making every lost opportunity increasingly significant. A separate analysis of the points Hamilton has already missed during Ferrari’s 2026 title campaign illustrates how fine the margins could become during the second half of the season.

Leclerc’s 31-point deficit to Hamilton is substantial without being decisive. The Monegasque therefore remains sufficiently close for Ferrari to face a genuine dilemma: support its better-positioned championship challenger now, or continue allowing both drivers to pursue their own ambitions until the standings create a clearer separation.

Frédéric Vasseur has previously resisted freezing Ferrari positions

Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur made his philosophy clear earlier in the campaign. Following the Chinese Grand Prix, he explained to Sky Sports F1 that he had not wanted to freeze the positions of his two drivers because he considered doing so unfair. Vasseur also felt that allowing them to compete was the better way to build the team.

That stance was easier to maintain during the early stages of the championship, when the eventual shape of the title fight was still developing. Ferrari’s situation is now more defined, and Vasseur’s wider assessment of the campaign has also been explored in his 2026 Ferrari mid-season verdict.

Hamilton and Leclerc have been allowed to race each other throughout the year, but the potential cost of doing so becomes more important as the championship progresses. If fighting one another causes either Ferrari to lose a position or championship points, the consequences could become significant when measured against Antonelli’s current advantage.

At the same time, Vasseur’s preference for internal competition is not simply about an individual Grand Prix. His broader approach to the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc reflects the challenge of extracting maximum performance from both sides of the garage without imposing a hierarchy prematurely.

Why prioritising Hamilton remains a difficult call for Ferrari

The case in Hamilton’s favour is straightforward. He has scored more points than Leclerc through the opening 11 rounds, holds second place in the championship and is 50 points behind the leader. If Ferrari ultimately decides that only one driver can realistically apply maximum pressure to Antonelli, the current standings make Hamilton the obvious candidate.

However, Ferrari also has strong reasons to avoid making that decision too soon. A 31-point gap between its drivers can still be recovered with 11 races remaining, meaning Leclerc has not been eliminated as a realistic contender. Reducing him to a supporting role at this stage could affect both his motivation and the atmosphere within the team.

There is also no guarantee that Hamilton’s championship challenge will remain stronger throughout the second half of the year. If Ferrari were to establish an early hierarchy only for the Briton’s title bid to fade, restricting Leclerc beforehand could prove counterproductive. That uncertainty is central to the debate over whether Ferrari should eventually go all-in on Hamilton.

Ferrari team orders could become decisive after the summer break

The question facing Vasseur is therefore less about whether Ferrari should ever use team orders and more about when the championship situation would justify them. Hamilton currently has the stronger claim based on points and championship position, but Leclerc remains close enough that an immediate decision would effectively ask Ferrari to choose between two drivers who can still influence the title race.

For now, the Scuderia must balance two competing risks: allowing Hamilton and Leclerc to continue racing freely could cost valuable points against Antonelli, while intervening too early could undermine a second Ferrari championship challenge that is still very much alive. With half of the 22-race campaign still to run, that decision could become one of the defining strategic questions of Ferrari’s 2026 season.
