As Formula 1 prepares to return to action at the Miami Grand Prix following a month-long break, attention is already shifting beyond Florida. Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes that while Miami will be an important milestone for Ferrari’s latest upgrades, the Scuderia’s real opportunities for victory may come later in the 2026 season at very different types of circuits.
The Miami weekend will also feature the second Sprint format of the year, adding extra pressure on teams to perform immediately with limited preparation time. With only one free practice session available, several teams are expected to introduce performance upgrades developed during the April development window. Ferrari is among those bringing new parts, making Miami a crucial reference point for the effectiveness of its latest package.
Ferrari’s 2026 development direction under scrutiny
Speaking on the F1 Nation Podcast, Jolyon Palmer discussed Ferrari’s progress so far in the 2026 Formula 1 season and the expectations surrounding the team’s next technical step. He explained that there is a sense of anticipation within the Maranello camp, as the team has been building towards a significant upgrade phase since the beginning of the year.
According to Jolyon Palmer, Ferrari has shown confidence internally that improvements were always on the way, and Miami is expected to mark the first real introduction of this updated performance package. He suggested that the Scuderia’s approach has been carefully structured, with the expectation that new developments would gradually unlock more potential from the SF-26.
However, Jolyon Palmer also noted that while the upgrades may represent progress, they are unlikely to immediately transform the Italian side into race winners. He pointed out that circuit characteristics in Miami could still expose weaknesses, particularly in terms of straight-line performance and overall power deployment compared to rival teams.
Jolyon Palmer explained that Ferrari may still require additional improvements in power and efficiency to fully compete at the front in Miami. The layout of the Miami International Autodrome, with its long straights and heavy braking zones, is expected to place a strong emphasis on engine performance and top-speed efficiency, areas where marginal differences can have a significant impact on lap time.
Why Miami may not be Ferrari’s strongest opportunity
Despite the introduction of upgrades, Jolyon Palmer believes that Miami might not represent the ideal environment for the SF-26 to fully shine. He suggested that the combination of long straights and high-speed sections could still play to the strengths of Ferrari’s main rivals, limiting the immediate impact of the new aerodynamic package.
In this context, Jolyon Palmer stressed that while Ferrari’s development direction appears positive, the true test of competitiveness will come on circuits that better match the car’s strengths. Rather than focusing solely on Miami results, the broader picture across the 2026 season remains more important for evaluating progress.
Canada and Monaco identified as Ferrari’s best winning chances
Looking further ahead on the Formula 1 calendar, Jolyon Palmer identified two specific races where Ferrari could realistically target victory opportunities: the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and the Monaco Grand Prix.
He explained that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Canada could suit Ferrari more effectively, as it features fewer extended straights and places a greater emphasis on traction, braking stability, and overall balance. These characteristics could help neutralize some of the weaknesses seen in high-speed efficiency and allow Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton to fight more competitively at the front.
Even more significantly, the former F1 driver highlighted Monaco as a potential standout opportunity for Ferrari. The unique street circuit is almost entirely dependent on chassis performance, mechanical grip, and aerodynamic downforce at low speeds. In his assessment, Ferrari appears to be competitive in these areas at present, which could make Monaco a key target for a strong result.
He added that in Monaco, power advantage plays a much smaller role compared to other circuits, meaning driver confidence and chassis stability become decisive factors. For Ferrari, this could create a more level playing field where Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are able to maximize the strengths of the SF-26 package.
The Maranello team’s progress in Miami will provide the first real indication of whether its upgrade path is moving in the right direction. However, according to Jolyon Palmer, the races in Canada and Monaco may ultimately define where the team’s true winning opportunities lie.
