Ferrari has unveiled an extreme upgrade specifically designed for the Mexican GP, taking a very aggressive approach on a key area of the SF-25. Here are the photos showcasing the changes.
The Scuderia from Maranello arrives at the Mexican Grand Prix following a strong performance in Austin, with the high altitude expected to play a major role both in aerodynamics and engine temperatures. The photos reveal the extreme innovation Ferrari has applied to the SF-25.
Every year, teams face challenges at the Mexico City circuit, located over 2,000 meters above sea level. The thin air forces teams to run maximum downforce wings to maintain acceptable aerodynamic grip, despite the track layout typically suggesting a low-downforce setup. However, the altitude also creates reliability challenges. In 2022, Ferrari ran a smaller turbocharger than their rivals and had to keep engine revs low to avoid failures. Maranello’s engine department has worked on this aspect over the years. Just like in 2024, Ferrari has introduced a specific upgrade to help the car ‘breathe’ better.
Large vents to help the power unit breathe
Last season, the SF-24 initially featured five large, long vents on the engine cover, with six additional outlets on the upper side of the sidepods. The main goal was to cool the power unit, turbocharger, and brake system. Ferrari is wary of high temperatures and aims to dissipate heat even at the expense of aerodynamic efficiency. As first revealed by AutoRacer.it, the SF-25 now features “enlarged grills to improve hot air extraction.” This is a specific innovation aimed at preventing reliability issues. In the photos below, we can see four vents on the sidepod and four on the upper side of the bodywork.
