Ferrari gets the perfect launch as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton seize the top two places
Ferrari could not have asked for a better beginning to the British Grand Prix. As the lights went out at Silverstone, Charles Leclerc made a superb getaway to immediately take control of the race, while Lewis Hamilton thrilled the home crowd with a brilliant move around the outside of Kimi Antonelli at Turn 1.
Within seconds of the start, Ferrari had turned its strong qualifying performance into the ideal race scenario, with Charles Leclerc leading the field and Lewis Hamilton slotting into second place to complete a spectacular Ferrari one-two.
The opening lap demonstrated both the SF-26’s excellent traction off the line and the drivers’ confidence in wheel-to-wheel combat. Charles Leclerc wasted no time in asserting himself at the front, while Lewis Hamilton committed to a bold outside move that paid off perfectly, allowing the seven-time world champion to move ahead of Antonelli before the field completed the first corner.
Charles Leclerc leads as Ferrari controls the early stages
By the time the field crossed the start-finish line to begin lap two, Charles Leclerc had already built a small but valuable advantage over his Ferrari teammate. The Monegasque held a lead of around half a second over Lewis Hamilton after an impressive opening lap that immediately put Ferrari in control of the race.
Behind the leading duo, Kimi Antonelli managed to withstand pressure from Mercedes teammate George Russell despite losing second place to Kimi Hamilton. The young Italian stayed close to the Ferrari driver’s gearbox while successfully keeping Russell behind during the remainder of the opening lap.
With 51 laps still remaining, the race was only just beginning, but Ferrari could hardly have scripted a stronger start. The Scuderia’s strategy now shifts to managing tyre degradation, pit-stop timing and race pace as Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton attempt to convert their early advantage into what would be a memorable result at Silverstone.
After recent encouraging signs in qualifying, the Italian side has once again shown that the SF-26 is capable of fighting at the very front. The opening lap of the British Grand Prix has provided the perfect foundation, but with Mercedes remaining close behind and strategy set to play a decisive role, the battle for victory is far from over.
