The track, however, quickly scaled down the expectations of Frédéric Vasseur and his drivers. The gap to McLaren has proven far too wide for Ferrari to hope to fight for even one of the two World Championships so strongly desired by the Tifosi. And so, what was meant to be the season of rebirth has rapidly turned into yet another year of transition.
But what is Ferrari missing to become great again?
An attempt to answer this question has come from a former Ferrari engineer who, during his years in Maranello, celebrated several world titles. “Even Schumacher struggled to understand the car in 1996 but still won three races. Then with Jean Todt and Luca di Montezemolo they found the right balance and built the group that dominated for years. The difference was the willingness to row in the same direction. And above all, internal problems were never allowed to slip outside,” Luigi Mazzola told Fanpage.
“Today this unity seems to be missing. The team needs strong leadership that knows what it means to win with Ferrari. The leader must set the example and understand everything related to the team. It seems to me that this is missing. A strong technical direction is needed. Being a good manager is not enough. You must understand how a Formula 1 car works,” the former engineer added.
“I never see Serra at the track, and d’Ambrosio is still a former driver. If we look at Newey, instead, he is always at the circuit, he knows every detail. As for Fred Vasseur, I don’t know if letting him go would solve the situation. I would certainly tell him to focus on improving the technical side,” Luigi Mazzola concluded.
