Ferrari restarts at Zandvoort
After a first part of the 2024 Formula 1 season marked by ups and downs, where Ferrari initially emerged as the main challenger to Max Verstappen and Red Bull, only to experience a somewhat inexplicable decline, the Maranello team is ready to climb back up the rankings after the summer break, hoping to at least reclaim the title of second-best team.
This will certainly not be an easy task, given the strength and competitiveness shown by McLaren since Miami, and the miraculous resurgence of Mercedes, which has won three of the last four races.
However, the SF24 single-seater, which suffered terribly from the aerodynamic updates introduced at the Circuit de Catalunya Barcelona, showed signs of recovery at the last race in Spa-Francorchamps, with Charles Leclerc inheriting pole position due to Max Verstappen’s penalty and returning to the podium in the race after his extraordinary victory in Monaco at the end of May, his only race victory of the 2024 Formula 1 season so far.
“We came into the summer break with the Belgian Grand Prix, where as a team we overall showed a good performance, securing pole position and a podium finish with Charles, results that have given us confidence,” commented Frederic Vasseur on the eve of the weekend.
“We’re restarting at Zandvoort, a completely different circuit from Spa-Francorchamps, short, narrow, and twisty, where every little detail will be crucial, especially in qualifying since overtaking is really difficult.” – the French manager explained – “As usual, we will focus on ourselves, trying to extract the maximum potential from our package, which means being able to find the best setup but also making the right choices at decisive moments – in qualifying and the race – both from the pit wall and the drivers.”
“Given the competition this season and the characteristics of the track, we can expect a battle decided by mere hundredths of a second.” – Fred Vasseur concluded ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.
Despite the negative results from Barcelona to Budapest, Ferrari remains fully in the fight for the Constructors’ Championship. With ten GPs remaining, they are “only” 63 points behind Red Bull, although McLaren is strongly positioning itself to dethrone the Milton Keynes team in the upcoming races.
