As Formula 1 gears up for the upcoming Formula One season, teams are in full swing preparing for the 2024 car launches and subsequent pre-season testing session, which is set to take place at the Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain, just a few days ahead of the first round of the new championship.
The bustling activity at the factories includes the influx of new personnel into various teams throughout the grid. Notably, McLaren recently welcomed Rob Marshall from Red Bull and David Sanchez from the Maranello team.
However, the engineering market is experiencing more significant movements beyond these headline acquisitions. Last season saw a controversy involving Laurent Mekies, with Frederic Vasseur and Christian Horner at the center. Laurent Mekies was chosen mid-season as Franz Tost’s successor at AlphaTauri, prompting negotiations the team bosses of Ferrari and Red Bull.
Understanding Laurent Mekies’ aspirations, the Ferrari team principal facilitated his move and engaged in extensive negotiations, seeking concessions for his team. These discussions involved various names, from high-profile figures to those considered “second-third lines” capable of bringing fresh ideas to Maranello.
The French manager has already made a crucial signing in Loic Serra from Mercedes, but due to his gardening period, significant contributions are expected in 2025 and 2026. Ferrari, under Fred Vasseur’s leadership, continues to recruit top engineers for Enrico Cardile’s technical staff.
Taking advantage of the negotiations surrounding Laurent Mekies, Fred Vasseur successfully recruited several personnel from Red Bull. In exchange for releasing Mekies, he secured a shorter gardening period (just six months) for these engineers, who have now transitioned from Milton Keynes and Faenza to Maranello, as confirmed by F1 journalists Giuliano Duchessa and Paolo D’Alessandro for the Italian website formu1a.uno.

Fred Vasseur’s focus on recruitment centered on three key areas: Performance, simulation, and tires. The new additions bring specific expertise in vehicle dynamics, simulations, and tire wear. Unlike more prominent figures, these engineers will join existing working groups, contributing not only to distant projects but also to present initiatives.
The goal is to expand knowledge, introduce fresh ideas, and invigorate the existing Ferrari team members, fostering a dynamic environment for the challenges ahead, as Fred Vasseur looks to bring Ferrari back at the top of Formula 1.
