Ferrari, Loïc Serra coming from Mercedes
“We will make noise.” Few but impactful words from Ferrari’s team principal Frederic Vasseur. And now the actions might follow. The famous operational technician in Maranello, starting from the 2025 car, could come from Mercedes, and his name is Loïc Serra. This rumor was reported by Daniele Sparisci of Corriere della Sera.
Who is Loïc Serra
Loïc Serra has a degree in mechanical engineering: the Frenchman, born in 1972, studied in Aix-en-Provence and Paris. Right after university, in 1996, he was hired by Michelin: over a decade, he refined his knowledge of tires and the mechanisms that make suspensions work. In October 2006, he moved to Formula 1, joining BMW-Sauber as head of performance. In 2010, he moved to Mercedes, where until January 2013 he was the Chief Engineer for vehicle engineering, and later the Head of Vehicle Dynamics until December 2018. For the past five years, he has been the Performance Director.
Therefore, the 51-year-old could be the first major acquisition of the Vasseur era at Ferrari. Furthermore, Serra is an expert in suspensions and tires, two areas in which the Scuderia of Maranello undoubtedly needs improvement, considering the evident issues with degradation (although they have improved since Canada).
Loïc Serra, who has worked alongside Aldo Costa, like all top engineers and technicians, will face a gardening period of at least a year and a half and will be operational only at the beginning of 2025. His potential arrival is part of the market campaign conducted by Fred Vasseur since his first day at Ferrari: after receiving Pierre Waché’s refusal (Red Bull), the Frenchman turned to Toto Wolff, who was his best man at his wedding, with whom he has always had excellent relations. On the outgoing front, Ferrari has acted well in advance, with the departures in the last seven months of Mattia Binotto, Laurent Mekies, and David Sanchez.
