The SF-26, Ferrari’s new project for the 2026 Formula 1 season, has started on the right foot. And now it has the potential to grow even stronger.
The first positive signs from the SF-26, Ferrari’s latest creation for the 2026 F1 campaign, have already emerged during the Barcelona tests. The new car allowed Ferrari’s engineers in Maranello to complete the entire planned work programme on the Catalan circuit, delivering very encouraging signals in terms of both performance and the reliability of the new power unit.
These results confirmed an excellent correlation between the simulator, the wind tunnel and the track, as reported by Motorsport Italia. The data collected in Barcelona was immediately fed back into the simulator, expanding the data pool and providing driver feedback that is increasingly representative of real track conditions. Ferrari will now face a crucial next step with the Bahrain tests, which are expected to further support the development of the new SF-26.
A car with strong development potential
Positive news is also coming from the engine side. The new power unit confirmed very good initial impressions and strong reliability, which will of course need to be reassessed in Bahrain with the introduction of the new fuels—unless Ferrari has already tested them. It is precisely around this area that Ferrari is basing the next updates scheduled to arrive in the near future.
According to the same source, updates are planned for the sidepods, which could become even more aggressively packaged. Ferrari aims to fully exploit the capabilities of the new engine, which features a steel cylinder head capable of operating at higher temperatures. This allows for a reduced cooling requirement, both in terms of physical size and overall weight.
In addition, the S-Duct system that Diego Tondi had consistently used on the SF-23 and SF-24 is no longer present. Such a cooling solution is no longer considered necessary, and the airscope also appeared to be the smallest among the eleven cars on track. Overall, the SF-26 has clearly started well—but Ferrari’s ambition is for it to grow significantly stronger as the team targets the 2026 Formula 1 world championship.
