Ferrari is facing an open crisis in Formula 1 as more key engineers prepare to leave
It is an open crisis at Ferrari. After Wolf Zimmermann and Lars Schmidt, now even aerodynamic chief Diego Tondi is reportedly “ready to leave” Maranello for a new chapter in Formula 1.
The news of this possible departure comes from journalist Leo Turrini, who cited whispers that, if confirmed, would mark the start of a genuine crisis for the Scuderia. In the background are the strong doubts, long rumored in the paddock, over Ferrari’s 2026 project, as well as the possibility of a reshuffle in technical staff driven by team principal Frédéric Vasseur.
It is a period of great turbulence in Maranello. The outcome of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza could hardly have satisfied the men of the Prancing Horse. The fast track in Brianza was one of the circuits where Ferrari was expected to perform well, challenge Red Bull and close the gap to McLaren. Instead, victory went once again to Max Verstappen, chased by the two McLaren drivers battling each other in the title fight.
Other opportunities will come, of course, but Ferrari is still weighed down by its lack of victories this season. Now that burden is being compounded by growing uncertainty within the technical department. Just yesterday, reports emerged of the likely departures of Wolf Zimmermann and Lars Schmidt, both apparently headed to Audi according to AutoRacer.it. But the exodus might not stop with these two experienced engine specialists.
Will Diego Tondi also say goodbye to Ferrari?
Several journalists, including Giorgio Terruzzi, Pino Allievi and Leo Turrini, have all mentioned concerning whispers from Maranello. Rumors suggest that highly qualified staff are preparing to leave the Gestione Sportiva, a worrying signal for the coming season.
In fact, on his blog Profondo Rosso, Turrini dropped another bombshell: even Diego Tondi, Ferrari’s head of aerodynamics, is reportedly ready to go. It is one of those rumors still to be verified, but if true, it could have serious consequences for the Scuderia’s future. With a technical revolution just around the corner, these potential exits only deepen the uncertainty surrounding Ferrari’s 2026 project.
