Ferrari SF-26 major upgrade expected to shake up Mercedes dominance in F1 2026. Miami GP crucial for Ferrari as major upgrade aims to reset 2026 season standings.

Inside Ferrari, there is growing belief that the team’s upcoming upgrade package for the Miami Grand Prix could significantly alter the direction of the 2026 Formula 1 season, potentially changing what many within Maranello are now referring to as the “script” of the championship.

After a solid but not yet dominant start to the new campaign, Ferrari has managed to secure multiple podium finishes through both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. While the SF-26 has shown clear competitiveness across different circuits, the Scuderia is still trailing the benchmark set by Mercedes, where George Russell and Kimi Antonelli have established an early lead in both race wins and points accumulation, giving the Silver Arrows a comfortable advantage in the Constructors’ Championship.

During the recent development break in the Formula 1 calendar, teams across the paddock have been working intensively to introduce performance upgrades aimed at closing the gap to Mercedes. Ferrari has been no exception, with reports indicating that the Italian outfit will introduce what is effectively a major evolution of the SF-26 package at the Miami Grand Prix.

Ferrari development push targets major aerodynamic gains

According to reports from Italian media outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport, senior Ferrari personnel believe that the upcoming upgrade package has the potential to reshape the competitive order of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Within the team, there is a growing sense that the Miami update could redefine Ferrari’s trajectory in the championship fight.

Sources suggest that Ferrari engineers have been working extensively to make the SF-26 significantly more stable and less vulnerable across a full race weekend, particularly in qualifying trim and during the later stages of races when fuel loads are reduced and aerodynamic balance becomes more critical.

The planned upgrade is understood to represent a broad aerodynamic evolution rather than a minor adjustment, with improvements expected across nearly every performance-critical area of the car. This includes key structural and airflow components designed to maximise efficiency under the current technical regulations.

Among the expected changes are revisions to the front wing assembly, including updated flap geometry and wing profile adjustments, as well as modifications to structural bulkhead areas aimed at improving airflow consistency and downforce stability.

Additional development work is also believed to include updates to the halo aerodynamic treatment, refinements to the car’s side edge design, and further optimisation of the rear wheel wake management. The underfloor structure is also expected to receive attention, alongside continued evaluation of Ferrari’s innovative rear aerodynamic concept, commonly referred to as the “Macarena” wing, which could make its competitive debut in Miami following private testing programmes.

Fred Vasseur highlights evolving Formula 1 championship picture

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has already suggested that the Miami Grand Prix could mark a turning point in the 2026 Formula 1 season, indicating that the championship picture may look very different once teams introduce their next major development packages.

The French manager acknowledged that while Ferrari’s early-season results have been encouraging, the team is still operating with a clear performance gap to Mercedes. However, he also emphasised that the situation remains highly dynamic, with the rate of development across the grid expected to play a decisive role in reshaping competitiveness in the coming months.

Fred Vasseur explained that the Maranello team’s objective is to consistently fight for podium positions while maintaining pressure on the front-runners. He noted that although Mercedes currently holds an advantage, the gap is not considered unbridgeable, particularly given the expected development pace of McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari itself.

He also highlighted that Miami could represent a different phase of the championship, depending on how effectively each team executes its upgrade path. According to Fred Vasseur, the ongoing development race will be intense, and teams will need to maximise performance gains in order to remain competitive in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings.

Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton key to Ferrari’s upgrade impact

With Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton forming Ferrari’s driver pairing, the Scuderia is well positioned to capitalise on any performance improvements delivered by the Miami upgrade package. Both drivers have already demonstrated strong adaptability to the SF-26, consistently delivering podium-level performances during the opening phase of the season.

If the expected aerodynamic developments deliver the anticipated gains, the Italian side believes that Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will be in a stronger position to convert existing podium finishes into race victories. The team’s internal expectation is that improved qualifying stability and race pace consistency could be decisive factors in challenging Mercedes over the remainder of the 2026 campaign.

As the Formula 1 season continues to evolve rapidly, Ferrari’s Miami upgrade is increasingly seen as a potential turning point. Whether it is enough to alter the competitive hierarchy will depend not only on the effectiveness of the technical package, but also on how Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton extract performance under pressure in a tightly contested championship battle.
