Last month it was reported that Andy Cowell, who recently left his position as Mercedes’ F1 engine boss, had turned down an offer from Scuderia Ferrari. Cowell joined the Mercedes team in 2004 and was instrumental in their development of the V6 hybrid engines introduced in 2014. He exited the Brixworth HQ at the start of July.
But according to a respected Italian journalist, Mercedes’ engine guru Andy Cowell could still eventually make the switch to Scuderia Ferrari. Before getting his promotion at Mercedes in 2013, Andy Cowell reportedly began flirting with a move to Maranello.
“He changed his mind after the resignation of Stefano Domenicali,” claims Corriere dello Sport’s Daniele Sparisci.
“Now he is free again and the courtship is likely to restart, even though in this hyper-complex F1 it is not a single name that makes the difference. But Ferrari needs new methods, new ideas and more advanced tools to get back to the top. It’s a long path out of the hellish situation of now.”- Daniele Sparisci explained for Corriere dello Sport.
Another Italian newspaper, Tuttosport, agrees, declaring after Spa: “This is no longer about a crisis. The whole system needs to be rethought.”
And Daniele Sparisci continued: “It is necessary to create the conditions so that, in these turbulent years of purges and restructuring, many – especially foreigners – have said no to Ferrari.”
The information was also shared by FIA Accredited journalist, Beatrice Zamuner, on social media: “According to Corriere, Ferrari is planning on allocating funds to afford experienced talents. Every hint seems to be pointing towards Andy Cowell, former Mercedes engine chief” – she posted.
