After a 2020 Formula One season to forget, Scuderia Ferrari is also looking for confirmation in the second half of the current championship; a fundamental step to for a strong 2022.
The Ferrari SF21 car is not yet able to get incolved in the fight for the Formula 1 drivers and constructors championship, but being in the fight for third place against a Mclaren that has been growing rapidly in recent seasons is an excellent sign of progress compared to a disastrous 2020.
The Maranello team, with half the championship still to be played, has already reached the number of podiums achieved in 2020. After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari already has 163 points, 32 points more than what the SF1000 collected in the 17 GPs held last year in a calendar strongly conditioned by the global health situation. The spoils could also have been richer if we consider the points lost by Charles Leclerc due to mistakes and bad luck in Monte Carlo and Budapest; the potential on these tracks was certainly for a podium finish.
And now the resumption of the championship after the summer break in Spa-Francorchamps represents a further test for the men led by Mattia Binotto to evaluate the work done on the SF21. Last season the Belgian and Italian Grand Prix showed all the shortcomings of the SF1000; low power of the engine and more. Aerodynamics also affected the negative result as the Alfa Romeo Racing of former Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen, equipped with the same engine, reached the checkered flag before Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc (13th and 14th respectively).
And after just two weeks, Monza will show up with the Dutch GP in the middle. So what Ferrari will we see on the fast tracks? Will we have to wait for circuits that are more congenial to the characteristics of the SF21? Will it be necessary to wait for the evolution of the power unit announced for the final phase of the season? Or with a little luck, will we be able to see a Ferrari on the top step already here?
Drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have demonstrated several times throughout the season that they are ready to take advantage of any opportunity. Ending the season even closer to Mercedes and Redbull would be even more encouraging for the conclusion of this championship and definitively project ourselves towards a more ambitious goal from 2022.
