If you start as third force and finish fourth, it can fit in the end. But if you start as a third force and close in fourth place despite the episodes eliminating three quarters of those in front of you, then there are regrets. For Ferrari, the weekend in Hungary was marked by regret, for the spin of Carlos Sainz on Saturday and the accident at the start involving Charles Leclerc. And in the words of team principal Mattia Binotto, the concept is perfectly expressed.
“Today I’m disappointed. It started raining just before the race, we knew that today was a great opportunity for us and we were also creating it. Charles started cautiously and found himself in second-third position, at that moment he had made the corner and had a clear road. Then he was literally rammed by Stroll, who did not know where he had come from and had no control over his car. We are sorry because it would have been important points for him too. The occasion was tempting. With Carlos we started from the pit lane to change the tires, it was the right choice; we made a very good pit stop under two seconds, then we stopped because we know it’s dangerous in the pit lane with all that traffic. With the unsafe releases there are clear rules, but none of the others respected them, they came back without looking at who was coming” – he told Sky Sport F1. “Also for Carlos it could have been a different race, he could have been behind the first two, instead he was stuck up for most of the race. In general, Carlos did some good first laps, but we are happy with his race anyway. Coming to the bottom in the end it was more of a missed opportunity, but not for our fault. Too bad for such a result” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
