Enzo Ferrari 35 years after his passing
Mid-August is never an ordinary time for Ferrari fans. Not exactly on the day of the Assumption (an Italian national holiday that celebrates the Catholic belief that God took the body of Jesus’ mother Mary into heaven at her death), but just 24 hours before, the historic founder Enzo passed away. The Drake left us in 1988, with a Formula 1 that at that moment was dominated by English teams, especially McLaren with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. However, at Monza – the first race without Il Commendatore – everything magically turned all red with a Ferrari sweep by Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto. It was the only act of insubordination against the English rivals’ supremacy, who set records that lasted for 35 years until the arrival of the current Red Bull era.
The Maranello team’s remembrance
The Scuderia remembered its founder on social media.
“Enzo Ferrari left us on 14 August 1988, but his legacy certainly hasn’t. People, technologies, buildings. Our Maranello factory’s expansion stands testament to his vision, enabling us to push boundaries and shape the future of automotive innovation.”
Physically, the Drake has been gone for 35 years, but in reality, he never really left because the people who worked with him absorbed his passion, charisma, and respect for the work. Il Commendatore was revered to the extent that he never took vacations, trying to pass these values on to colleagues of future generations. And now, Ferrari’s vision and ideas have become the DNA of the Scuderia.
