Carlos Sainz has undergone surgery, and Scuderia Ferrari wanted to reassure all its fans before fully focusing on the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Spanish driver underwent surgery after experiencing an appendicitis issue and is currently hospitalized at the Jeddah hospital.
From the Saudi Arabia circuit, they report that the Spanish driver’s surgery was perfectly successful. Now, it will be necessary to wait for a few days for Ferrari’s number 55 to recover and get back on track.
“The operation is complete. Carlos is well, although he will remain under observation at the Jeddah hospital. We are all close to him, offering all the support he needs in this delicate moment,” reads the statement from Ferrari published on all social media pages.
For the Spaniard, this is the first race he has missed since joining Ferrari. He had already felt a slight discomfort from Wednesday. Then on Thursday, he took to the track to participate regularly in the first two free practice sessions.
The Spanish driver seemed to struggle from the beginning but wanted to grit his teeth to be there and participate in the Saudi Arabian GP. However, on Friday morning, the situation worsened, and he underwent emergency surgery at the Jeddah hospital.
In his place, the very young Oliver Bearman, a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, will race. For the British driver, it is an absolute debut in a Formula 1 race. What makes the statistic even more surprising is undoubtedly the fact that he will be the youngest driver ever to drive a Ferrari in a race.
Moreover, with Charles Leclerc, he will also form the youngest pair ever at the helm of the Maranello team. Regarding Carlos Sainz, the Spanish driver will likely return to the track already in Melbourne in two weeks.
