Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will be able to use the Maranello team’s upgraded power unit as “soon as possible”, after Carlos expressed his disappointment for not being able to hold the lead at Sochi Autodrom.
Carlos Sainz started the 2021 Russian Grand Prix in second place, but with a great start he quickly moved up into the lead, thanks to a great overtaking move on the outside of Lando Norris. However, for Carlos the joy turned to disappointment when, on lap 13, Lando Norris powered his way past the Ferrari SF21 car, unable to defend P1.
Speaking after the Russian Grand Prix, which he finished on the last step of the podium, Carlos said: “The next time I’m P1 I’d like not to be overtaken with that ease.”

Scuderia Ferrari hope to make that a reality for the Spaniard with team boss Mattia Binotto confirming he will take their new upgraded PU in the not-too-distant future: “As soon as possible” – the Ferrari boss said, as reported by Sky Italia, “because we think it’s an advantage. Then we will have to decide based on the track, on the overtaking opportunities. But I don’t deny that the idea is to do it as soon as possible.” – he added.
Mattia Binotto was happy with what he has seen of Ferrari’s new hybrid system, which Charles Leclerc used for the first time at Sochi Autodrom:
“The power unit behaved well,” said Mattia Binotto, “it behaved as we expected So it works properly, I think for Charles it was also a support for his race and this is positive for the rest of the season. Starting from the back of the grid we didn’t expect to score many points with him but for how the race was going all in all in the end we hoped to do that. So good to have changed it, good for Charles to have this power unit for the rest of the season, it’s a positive point for sure. The old one is not bad but the difference between the two is present. Carlos with the new one could have done even better.” – he explained.
Unfortunately for Charles Leclerc, the Monegasque driver got caught out in the chaos of the rain in the final stages of the race, finishing outside the points as Ferrari delayed his stop for intermediate tyres.
