Fresh from its breakthrough victory in Spain, Ferrari is preparing what could become one of the most important technical developments of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Maranello team is reportedly nearing the introduction of an upgraded version of its 067/6 power unit, a package that could significantly reduce the performance gap to its closest rivals.
Before the new specification can make its competitive debut, Ferrari must receive final authorization through the FIA’s ADUO framework, the mechanism designed to help manufacturers recover performance deficits under Formula 1’s evolving engine regulations. Once approval arrives, the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring is expected to become the launch platform for a power unit that many inside the paddock believe could reshape the competitive order.
Ferrari targets major step forward in engine performance
Throughout the first phase of the season, Ferrari has made substantial gains with aerodynamic upgrades and chassis improvements, helping both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc challenge consistently at the front of the field. However, internal analysis reportedly showed that further progress was still possible on the powertrain side.
The latest development effort has been led by Ferrari engine chief Enrico Gualtieri and the specialists working in Maranello’s power unit division. In parallel, Ferrari’s long-standing technical partnership with Shell has continued to play a crucial role in extracting additional efficiency from the combustion process.
The objective is straightforward: increase thermal efficiency, improve combustion quality and recover horsepower that can be converted directly into lap-time gains.
A radical cylinder head concept behind the upgrade
One of the most intriguing aspects of Ferrari’s revised engine package is believed to involve significant changes to the cylinder head architecture.
Reports suggest Ferrari engineers have moved beyond traditional solutions by adopting an advanced steel-alloy cylinder head design in place of the more conventional aluminum-based approach. Such a change could allow the combustion chamber to operate under substantially higher thermal loads while maintaining structural integrity.
The advantages extend beyond durability alone. Higher operating temperatures can improve combustion efficiency, enabling engineers to extract more performance from each fuel cycle while maintaining reliability over extended race distances. In modern Formula 1, where manufacturers search for gains measured in fractions of a percent, these innovations can produce meaningful performance improvements when combined with optimized fuel formulations and combustion strategies.
Shell partnership delivers additional performance potential
Another key element of Ferrari’s upgrade package reportedly concerns fuel development. Close collaboration between Ferrari and Shell has focused on maximizing the effectiveness of the revised combustion concept.
According to reports emerging from Italy, regulatory adjustments could permit intake air temperatures to reach higher thresholds than previously allowed. This would create conditions for more effective combustion and enable the engine to utilize fuel more efficiently. Greater combustion efficiency translates directly into increased power output, particularly under qualifying and high-performance race conditions where every horsepower matters.
The combination of revised engine hardware and optimized fuel characteristics is believed to be responsible for the growing optimism surrounding Ferrari’s latest development package.
From five horsepower to fifteen?
Early estimates suggested Ferrari’s revised power unit might deliver gains in the region of five horsepower, enough to represent a useful but not transformative improvement.
However, more recent paddock speculation points toward a considerably larger increase. Several reports now indicate that Ferrari could potentially unlock as much as 15 additional horsepower compared to its previous specification. If those figures prove accurate, the implications could be significant. In Formula 1’s ultra-competitive environment, double-digit horsepower gains are rare and can have a measurable effect on straight-line speed, acceleration and overall race performance.
Such an improvement would also strengthen Ferrari’s position in direct battles against Mercedes while helping Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc maximize the benefits of the team’s increasingly competitive SF-26 package.
ADUO approval remains the final hurdle
Despite the excitement surrounding the project, Ferrari cannot deploy the new engine until the FIA completes the ADUO approval process.
The Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system was introduced to prevent excessive disparities between power unit manufacturers and provide opportunities for those trailing the benchmark to recover lost ground. Recent FIA assessments suggested that Ferrari’s internal combustion engine still trailed the strongest competitors, making the team a potential beneficiary of the framework. Once formal approval is granted, Ferrari is expected to move quickly to introduce the upgraded specification.
A crucial moment in Ferrari’s championship ambitions
The timing of the upgrade could hardly be more important. Ferrari arrives in Austria carrying renewed momentum after recent improvements transformed the team’s competitiveness and delivered Lewis Hamilton’s first victory in red.
While aerodynamic development remains a major focus, engine performance will be equally critical as the championship battle intensifies throughout the second half of the season. For Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, additional power could provide another valuable weapon against Mercedes and the rest of the front-running field. For Ferrari, it represents an opportunity to convert recent progress into a sustained challenge at the top of Formula 1.
The numbers circulating in the paddock will mean little until the upgraded power unit reaches the track. But if Ferrari’s engineers have achieved anything close to the reported figures, the Austrian Grand Prix could mark the beginning of a new phase in the team’s campaign and potentially alter the balance of power in the championship fight.
