Ferrari positioned as Max Verstappen’s backup choice if Mercedes and Red Bull deals fall through. Max Verstappen considers Scuderia Ferrari as a potential ‘Plan C’ for his 2026 Formula 1 season.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Charles Leclerc, race start 2025 F1

Max Verstappen faces a pivotal and career-defining decision in the coming weeks that could dramatically impact not only his own Formula 1 career trajectory but also the futures and destinies of several other top drivers within the highly competitive world of Formula 1 racing. Since the middle of last season, Red Bull Racing has been struggling to consistently meet the very high expectations placed on the team, with their overall performance falling short of the extremely high standards set by the reigning World Champion Max Verstappen. Despite these challenges, the 27-year-old Dutch driver did exceptionally well to maintain his lead in the fiercely contested drivers’ championship last year, even as rival teams such as McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari introduced substantial upgrade packages that enabled them to leapfrog Red Bull on various race weekends.

During the winter break, Red Bull developed their first Formula 1 car without the legendary aerodynamic genius Adrian Newey’s input, marking a significant moment for the team’s engineering department. After 11 race weekends into the current season, it appears that Red Bull has yet to fully resolve their technical and performance challenges, which has contributed to a more difficult campaign than anticipated. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda’s future in Formula 1 remains highly uncertain as he continues to struggle to consistently reach points-scoring positions, which has added additional pressure and scrutiny on the Red Bull camp and its affiliated teams.

These ongoing developments have sparked the most talked-about and debated topic in the 2025 Formula 1 driver market, with widespread speculation linking Max Verstappen to a potential high-profile move to the Mercedes team. Motorsport journalist Ralf Bach, speaking from sources within the Formula 1 paddock and team insiders, has revealed what he believes to be Verstappen’s definitive ‘Plan A’ for the 2026 Formula 1 season, along with two alternative contingency options. However, one of these alternatives reportedly faces considerable resistance from Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner.

According to Ralf Bach, Max Verstappen’s primary plan for the 2026 Formula 1 season is to make a high-profile and strategic switch from Red Bull to Mercedes. Ralf Bach explained on the F1 Insider YouTube channel that after holding numerous confidential conversations with various well-informed sources, he has formed a very clear and detailed picture of Verstappen’s intentions. The journalist indicated that if Mercedes demonstrates a strong and genuine desire to sign Max Verstappen at all costs, then that would become Verstappen’s top priority and preferred course of action.

If Mercedes fails to fully commit to Verstappen’s signing, his second option would be to remain with Red Bull Racing for the foreseeable future, closely monitoring how the rest of the 2025 season unfolds before making a final, more informed decision in the new year when fresh engines and revised technical regulations come into effect. However, this continuation at Red Bull Racing comes with a highly significant stipulation: Verstappen reportedly will only agree to stay if Christian Horner is no longer serving as the team principal. This condition strongly suggests the existence of an ongoing internal conflict or disagreement, and according to Ralf Bach, the leadership at Red Bull Racing now faces a crucial and potentially difficult decision regarding the future role of Christian Horner within the team.

Regardless of the position taken by Mercedes, it is believed that retaining Max Verstappen would require a fundamental leadership change at Red Bull Racing, with Horner’s departure being a key factor to satisfy the reigning World Champion’s conditions. Christian Horner himself has been linked to Scuderia Ferrari as a potential replacement for the embattled team principal Fred Vasseur, although Horner has publicly and firmly denied these rumors. Given this complex situation, it seems highly unlikely that Horner will voluntarily step down merely to appease Max Verstappen, leading to a stalemate and potential impasse between the driver and the team management. Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, has also been vocal in the past about his opinions regarding Christian Horner, adding another layer of complexity and tension to the situation.

Ralf Bach further disclosed that Max Verstappen has a third option on the table if neither Mercedes nor Red Bull works out in his favor: Ferrari. Although it is understood that Aston Martin is not considered a serious contender for Verstappen at this time due to various personal and professional uncertainties, Ferrari remains a possibility, albeit as a less favored ‘Plan C’ for the Dutch driver. Bach emphasized that Aston Martin currently does not play any meaningful role in Verstappen’s future plans.

Expanding on this third option, Scuderia Ferrari, the iconic Italian Formula 1 team with a rich history and passionate global fanbase, could emerge as a significant contender in Max Verstappen’s decision-making process for the 2026 season if both Mercedes and Red Bull fail to secure his signature. Ferrari has been working hard to return to their former glory days and is keen on assembling a lineup that could challenge for both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships in the near future. Joining Ferrari would mean Verstappen lining up alongside the talented Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc, who has been the face of Ferrari’s future for several years. While the prospect of teaming up with seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes remains highly appealing to many fans, a partnership with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari could offer Verstappen a new and exciting challenge within a team eager to reclaim dominance in the sport.

Ferrari’s interest in Verstappen would be a major statement, signaling their intention to build a championship-winning team around the Dutch driver’s exceptional talent. This potential move could reshape the Formula 1 landscape and add a new level of intrigue and rivalry, especially given the existing competitiveness between Verstappen and Leclerc on the track. However, the Italian team would need to carefully navigate internal dynamics, contract negotiations, and technical developments to accommodate Verstappen’s driving style and ambitions.

For many Formula 1 fans around the world, the idea of Max Verstappen partnering with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes is an extremely exciting prospect, combining two of the sport’s biggest stars in one team. However, if Ferrari does suddenly become a viable option, it is more probable that Max Verstappen would join forces with Charles Leclerc rather than Lewis Hamilton, forming a formidable duo capable of challenging for titles. Given the Dutchman’s exceptional talent, proven track record, and market value, every team on the Formula 1 grid would be eager to secure his services should he become available.

The next few weeks are expected to be absolutely critical as Max Verstappen carefully evaluates his options, weighs his priorities, and finalizes the trajectory of his racing career. His ultimate decision will undoubtedly send significant ripples across the entire Formula 1 paddock, influencing driver movements, team strategies, and championship battles well into the foreseeable future.
