Ferrari are reportedly confident that they can close the performance gap to Mercedes in the 2026 Formula 1 season, with internal projections suggesting that a fully competitive power unit could be achieved within the next three race weekends.
After a disappointing 2025 campaign, Scuderia Ferrari have shown a significantly stronger start to 2026, with both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc already securing at least one podium finish each. This early consistency has placed Ferrari in second position in the Constructors’ Championship standings, behind a leading Mercedes outfit.
With Formula 1 currently in a scheduled five-week break, teams across the paddock are intensifying development programmes, focusing heavily on performance upgrades and reliability improvements ahead of the next phase of the season.
Ferrari targeting Mercedes-level performance with aggressive upgrade timeline
According to reports from Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Ferrari’s long-term engine development strategy has undergone an acceleration, with the team now aiming to bring forward key power unit upgrades originally planned for later in the season.
While initial expectations placed major engine-related developments around July, the Maranello team is now believed to be working to significantly reduce that timeframe, with a potential introduction targeted as early as the Barcelona Grand Prix weekend.
In parallel, Ferrari are also preparing an updated aerodynamic and software package, which is reportedly scheduled for introduction at the Miami Grand Prix. This dual-development approach reflects Ferrari’s intent to improve both raw engine performance and overall car efficiency in a compressed timeline.
Internal focus has also reportedly increased on benchmarking rival progress, particularly Mercedes, as Ferrari aim to position both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to compete on equal technical terms during the European leg of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
As part of this broader performance push, Ferrari have strengthened their technical structure with the addition of Maxime Martinez as Power Unit Performance Engineer. Having previously worked within Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP), Martinez is expected to play a key role in optimising energy deployment, control systems, and overall power unit efficiency within the Ferrari project.
Fred Vasseur assesses Ferrari progress and sets expectations for championship fight
Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has also offered an honest assessment of the team’s start to the 2026 season, acknowledging both progress and remaining performance gaps to Mercedes during the opening races.
Speaking after the Japanese Grand Prix in an interview with Sky Sports Italy, Fred Vasseur explained that while Ferrari are satisfied with the direction of development, the current objective remains clear: consistent podium finishes and the ability to challenge for race victories.
Fred Vasseur reportedly admitted that there is still a measurable performance deficit to Mercedes, although he emphasised that the gap is not insurmountable and could be reduced significantly with upcoming upgrades.
He also highlighted that the Miami Grand Prix could mark a turning point in the 2026 season, suggesting that the competitive order may shift once the next wave of upgrades is fully introduced across the grid.
Fred Vasseur further stressed the importance of consistent point scoring for both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, underlining that Ferrari must remain close to Mercedes in the championship standings while continuing to refine performance in every race weekend.
He also noted that the development rate in the 2026 Formula 1 season is expected to be extremely high across all top teams, meaning continuous improvement will be essential if Ferrari are to maintain a genuine title challenge.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc expected to benefit from upcoming Ferrari upgrades
If Ferrari’s development direction proves successful, both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could soon find themselves in direct contention for race victories against Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Such a scenario would represent a significant step forward for the Italian side, potentially restoring the team to regular front-running status and delivering a more competitive championship battle for Formula 1 fans throughout the remainder of the 2026 season.
