What Ferrari can ultimately gain from the web of contradictions surrounding the team at the moment remains difficult to predict. However, as Formula 1 heads to Monaco, there are several reasons for optimism in Maranello.
Charles Leclerc is convinced that the situation will be completely different around the streets of Monte Carlo, a venue where he believes Ferrari could once again fight for victory. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, arrives encouraged after delivering his strongest performance since joining Ferrari. Ironically, that result came after deciding not to rely on what he previously described as “the best simulator ever seen.” After also criticizing certain aspects of Ferrari’s power unit, the seven-time world champion secured his best race finish in red, claiming second place and his second podium with the team following his earlier success in China.
Team principal Fred Vasseur is equally optimistic, pointing to the possibility of a significant improvement beginning with the Spanish Grand Prix. Ferrari is currently working on a substantial aerodynamic upgrade package for Barcelona, with key developments expected on both the front wing and the floor.
Monaco could be a turning point for Ferrari
Before Barcelona arrives, however, Ferrari faces what could become one of the most decisive weekends of its season. Monaco appears perfectly suited to the strengths of the SF-26, with its emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency and the characteristics of Maranello’s compact turbocharger package.
There is also another important factor entering the equation. Starting from the next Grand Prix, the FIA will introduce revised verification procedures concerning compression ratio regulations. The topic generated considerable discussion during the winter months, and Mercedes — believed to have an advantage in this area — has already adapted its power unit to comfortably pass the new tests.
Ferrari’s internal contradictions are highlighted by the vastly different experiences of its two drivers in Montreal. While Lewis Hamilton looked inspired and even battled Max Verstappen on equal terms, ultimately finishing ahead of the Dutchman, Charles Leclerc endured one of the most difficult weekends of his Formula 1 career despite driving the same machinery.
“A horrible weekend, the most difficult of my career,” Charles Leclerc admitted. “The only positive thing is that Lewis had the same car as me, and by looking at his data I will try to find answers to understand why I struggled so much.”
Ferrari goes all-in on Monaco
Both Ferrari drivers are already fully focused on the challenge that awaits in Monte Carlo.
“My feeling will come back there. I’m not worried. Our car is much more suited to Monaco than Canada,” Charles Leclerc explained.
Lewis Hamilton shared a similarly confident outlook: “If we performed so well on a power-sensitive circuit, then on a track where that matters less we could be even stronger. I’m looking ahead and thinking about Monaco, ready for a great battle.”
It is not difficult to guess who Hamilton expects to be fighting against at the front. However, weather and track conditions could also play a major role in shaping the competitive order.
The Canadian Grand Prix was held in unusually cold conditions, with temperatures hovering around 12°C. For modern Formula 1 tyres, those figures are close to the limit of what is considered ideal operating territory. A return to more typical temperatures in Monaco could help bring McLaren back into contention after a difficult Sunday in Montreal.
The Woking-based team compromised its race by choosing wet-weather tyres for the start, a decision that ultimately backfired. Interestingly, Lewis Hamilton had also wanted to begin the race on wet tyres, while Max Verstappen had initially selected them before changing his mind at the last possible moment.
With Ferrari showing encouraging signs, Monaco now represents a crucial opportunity. A strong result on the streets of Monte Carlo could transform the narrative surrounding the Scuderia and provide valuable momentum before the arrival of the much-anticipated upgrade package in Spain.
