Despite the fact that Scuderia Ferrari performed well at the Red Bull Ring circuit in the Styrian Grand Prix and the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend, it is still a strange feeling because the legendary Maranello team has not come close to a podium finish. While the Italian side was disappointed at the French Grand Prix, with both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz outside the points, the last weekend in Spielberg was more positive, with a decent performance and both drivers scoring points.
Speed on straights
Whereas the team from Maranello caused a stir a few years ago with a fast engine, that was later limited due to a FIA technical directive, power is exactly what is lacking this season. Team Principal Mattia Binotto explains: “We knew that on paper the circuit was not the best for our car. You need a lot of top speed on the straights, but that’s where we are still lacking.” – he said, as reported by Motorsport-total.com.
That Ferrari has the ability to be fast over one lap this season, at certain tracks, was proven by the races in Baku and Monaco. Charles Leclerc also managed to achieve the fastest top speed at the Red Bull Ring, at around 332km/h. During the race there are still problems however, as the Ferrari team boss admits: “When we arrived here last week our focus was obviously on the race pace, to avoid ending up in a situation like Paul Ricard again. But I don’t think that’s the answer. I think it’s more down to the track.” – he added.
Although Mattia Binotto a more difficult race for Ferrari in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Italian side’s team principal is pleased with the team spirit within the Scuderia: “The way we drove in the race was great – both the tyre management and the strategy. The team is growing together more and more. Not only in spirit, but also in actions.” – he concluded.
