Ferrari’s optimism after the Barcelona tests appears to stem from significant work by the engineers, who may have made a discovery that could immediately benefit the drivers—and more.
Positive start to preseason testing
The first preseason tests in Barcelona proved positive for Ferrari, which arrived in Spain with the sole objective of testing the reliability of the SF-26, particularly its new power unit. From this perspective, no major issues were detected, which has reportedly generated a sense of optimism in Maranello. The engineers may have made a significant “discovery” that could aid both the drivers and the development of the 2026 car.
At this stage, it is still impossible to make predictions about performance or standings, as no team has revealed its true pace. Some teams appeared stronger in terms of reliability, while others still have work to do. However, this does not provide a clear picture, and even at Bahrain or the opening race in Australia, the full picture will remain uncertain. Ferrari has so far adhered to its predetermined work plan, while the first planned updates are already in preparation. Nevertheless, the road to Melbourne is still long.
Further progress after Barcelona?
According to Motorsport.com, Ferrari was positively surprised by the results from the Barcelona tests. One key aspect is that the engineers, particularly the aerodynamic team, reportedly found a strong correlation between track data and simulator output at Montmeló. This means the simulator used by Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton now more closely replicates the on-track driving sensations. This is especially helpful given the limited number of testing days with the new cars, allowing the drivers to train in conditions closer to reality. It also aids car development, giving engineers a better understanding of the vehicle under the new regulations.
Additionally, it appears the new SF-26 does not feature the S-Duct, the S-shaped channel that helped improve airflow under the floor by increasing the quality of air directed to the diffuser. Despite these positive signals, Ferrari should not yet be considered a championship contender. While it is possible the team could compete at the front, it is simply too early to say. As previously noted, we are only at the beginning of the season, and the new regulations are expected to deliver plenty of surprises. The initial preseason tests are encouraging for the Maranello team, but on-track performance will now need to be evaluated in detail.
The newfound harmony between Ferrari’s virtual tools and the SF-26’s track behavior could be the silent advantage Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc need to master the 2026 technical reset. As the team moves toward the official tests in Bahrain, the focus will transition from mere reliability to extracting the ultimate pace required to challenge the front of the grid.
