Scuderia Ferrari continues to work on the track in this final part of the 2021 Formula 1 season with an eye to the crucial 2022 championship, when the Italian side hopes to be able to challenge for podiums and wins.
The Maranello team led by Mattia Binotto is back from fourth and sixth places at Monza in the Italian Grand Prix with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz respectively. McLaren’s one-two at Monza led to the Woking team regaining third place in the constructors’ standings ahead of the Russian Grand Prix and Scuderia Ferrari is called to fight back in the next races. At stake is also the introduction of the new power unit which will cost Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz a penalty on the starting grid, but which will allow the Maranello technicians to evaluate on track some solutions expected on the 2022 engine that will be completely new compared to the current engine.
According to a recent report in the Italian media, Ferrari is on track in Imola today and tomorrow for a test with the 2018 car, the SF71H. In fact, two Ferrari trucks have been parked in the Imola paddock since yesterday. Charles Leclerc got off the track today but reported a technical problem that forced him to stop at the Variante Alta, the corner that since last Sunday was named after Fausto Gresini. Carlos Sainz is expected at the wheel tomorrow. Unfortunately the weather is not helping and at this moment the rain is pouring. The Ferrari mechanics are busy repairing the technical issue of the single-seater taken to the track by Charles Leclerc. In addition to the starting drivers, Antonio Fuoco will probably also be involved in this two-day test and it is very likely that the focus of this session is precisely on the new power unit expected to make its debut on the track in October.
