17 September in Ferrari History: Carlos Sainz Wins Singapore

On 17 September 2023, Carlos Sainz won the Singapore Grand Prix for Ferrari after a tense tactical contest at Marina Bay. It became the only Grand Prix victory of the season achieved by a team other than Red Bull.

2023: Carlos Sainz controls the Singapore finale

Starting from pole position, Carlos Sainz managed the race at the front. The closing laps brought an increasing threat from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, whose Mercedes cars were on fresher tyres.

Carlos Sainz responded by keeping Lando Norris close enough behind to use DRS. That assistance helped the McLaren driver defend against Mercedes, protecting the Ferrari’s lead as the chasing cars fought among themselves.

Carlos Sainz finished ahead of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, while Charles Leclerc took fourth. The victory rewarded judgement and control as much as outright speed.

A different Singapore memory from 2017

The same calendar date also includes the 2017 Singapore Grand Prix, when both Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen retired following the opening-lap collision.

Placed together, the two races show how sharply fortunes can change at Marina Bay: an early double retirement in one season, followed years later by a carefully managed Ferrari victory.

About this calendar

Race, qualifying, Sprint and Ferrari driver biographical dates are generated from the locally processed F1DB dataset. Session anniversaries are shown only when an explicit session date is available in the source. Selected non-race Ferrari milestones are curated separately from Ferrari sources. Historical shared-car result rows are preserved without inventing additional Grand Prix starts.
