Ferrari on 21 May: the team’s Formula 1 championship debut
21 May 1950 marks Ferrari’s first appearance in the Formula 1 World Championship. The Scuderia entered the Monaco Grand Prix, where Alberto Ascari finished second and secured a podium at the beginning of the team’s championship history.
Half a century later, Michael Schumacher won the 2000 European Grand Prix on the same calendar date, connecting Ferrari’s championship origins with one of its most successful modern eras.

1950: Ferrari enters the World Championship at Monaco
Ferrari did not participate in the inaugural World Championship round at Silverstone. Its championship debut came at the following race in Monaco, with the Ferrari 125 F1.
Alberto Ascari finished second, Raymond Sommer took fourth and Luigi Villoresi retired. The podium gave Ferrari an immediate result against the opposition in the new championship.
A debut, rather than the first Ferrari race
The Monaco anniversary specifically concerns Ferrari’s entry into the Formula 1 World Championship. The team’s racing history had begun earlier, so 21 May 1950 should not be confused with the foundation of Scuderia Ferrari or the first appearance of a Ferrari-built racing car.
Its first World Championship Grand Prix victory would follow at Silverstone on 14 July 1951. The Monaco debut and the Silverstone win therefore mark separate stages in Ferrari’s early championship development.
2000: victory at the Nürburgring
Michael Schumacher won the European Grand Prix on 21 May 2000, with Rubens Barrichello finishing fourth. The result contributed to Ferrari’s successful campaign for both championships that year.
