Ferrari on 2 June: Michael Schumacher’s first win in red
On 2 June 1996, Michael Schumacher won the Spanish Grand Prix and claimed his first Formula 1 victory for Ferrari. Heavy rain at Barcelona provided the setting for a performance that became a defining moment of his first season with the Scuderia.
The win was the beginning of a Ferrari victory record that would eventually reach 72 Grands Prix, but its immediate significance was simpler: the new partnership had won its first race.

A breakthrough in the Barcelona rain
Driving the Ferrari F310, Michael Schumacher demonstrated the wet-weather ability that became one of the hallmarks of his career. In difficult conditions, he established a decisive advantage and brought Ferrari its first victory of the 1996 season.
The result stood out in a year when Ferrari was still developing into a consistent championship challenger. It showed what its new leading driver could achieve even before the team possessed the package that would later deliver sustained title success.
The first of three Ferrari wins in 1996
Barcelona was followed by victories at Spa-Francorchamps and Monza later that season. Together, those results gave Michael Schumacher three wins in his first year racing for Ferrari.
The Spanish success therefore belongs to the beginning of the partnership, several years before his first Ferrari Drivers’ Championship in 2000. It was a breakthrough victory rather than a championship-deciding race.
